View Full Version : Can anything be done about no lens in the eye.

I am kinda new to the boards and I was wondering if anyone else had this (or similar) problem.
When I was seven-years-old, I was in a tree with a playmate and we were yelling at boys on the ground. We teased them so one those a stick up in the tree and it went in my right eye. The stick fell back out and the eye stayed in. I really don't remember a whole lot more because I am 25 now and I was drugged to calm down. They covered up both of my eyes so I wouldn't move them together like your brain makes you do. I was told that my eye was flattening and the lens was broken. It had to be removed with surgery or else I would lose the whole eye and have a hole I guess. When I was younger, my mother always told me that another lens could be put into my eye, but only after I am done growing. She has said some lies to me before, so I was a little worried. I have some good insurance now and I am over 21. I have an appt. with the ophthalmologist (sp?) on Jan 6th.
It is not completely blind in my right eye, but it is useless. I can not read anything with it. I can not tell what something is, only it's base color. It looks almost like you opened your eyes underwater. That is the best I can describe to you. I don't drive or do yard work because I am scared to die or lose another eye.
You would think after all those years you would not run into walls anymore. You would get used to the blur on the right side of everything in the "good eye."

I was just wondering if they will be able to even do this. Giving me sight back, is what I mean. Do they do lens transplants even? Where do they get the lens from? I did a google search and only got the lasik and sports injuries info. Wouldn't they have to do more then just lasik? I am willing to fly back up to Baltimore, Maryland to go to Johns Hopkins eye center. Thats where I had lived before TN. Thanks in advance.

Amy,

You will not know if you are a candidate for an intraocular lens or IOL, until you see the Dr. If you would like to read a little bit more about IOLs and the surgery involved etc. You need to read about cataracts. When people have cataracts the Dr removes the useless clouded lens in the eye and replaces it with a new manmade one. This is what the Dr may be able to do for you.

I keep saying "may" because only some people are candidates depending on the original injury. I hope that the Dr will have good news for you.

To be honest with you....I don't know....

When I was born I had blood clots on both my lenses....so they went to remove the clots but had to remove both my lenses instead....

I don't know much about transplants because...well due to my various problems I'm not a canidate and never will be. every time when I was younger and I'd whine to my parents about it they would just tell me the proceedure is far too new/risky. Don't know how true that is...I think they were just telling me that to get me to shut up LOL

Good luck at the doctors next month :D

Thanks for the info. I am going to do a better google search now. My eye hopfully is a canidate for that transplant thing IOL you said. I don't know if the rest of the eye is ok though...(other parts) ...my pupil doesn't dilate. I will see on the 6th of Jan. Thanks again.

Lets just say many surgeries later and high perscription lenses/contacts....I'm lucky....they never expected me to come as far as I did....but I've always been one for suprises hehe....Even still it's not great my left eye is only 20/70 (on a good day) with correction...but they got the right down to 20/25 (On a REALLY good day)

Really?? They did all that for you!! Sounds like a lot of work. It must pay off since it gets you close to 20/20 as possible.
