I just got the middle of my ear in the cartilge done a few days ago and the right side is fine but the left is swollen and HURTS!!! I sleep on that side, but I've been trying not to. Do you think this is why? I have 12 holes in my ears alltogether, and the ONLY one that has ever gotten infected was my top left, i had hair wound around it :( ouchie. Well if anyone could help, I would luv it. Thx

You should never remove an infected piercing. I'm sorry I didn't see this post until after you removed it. but for future reference, never ever ever remove an infected piercing, because the hole will close around the infection. the best thing to do is soak it in a light saline solution (warm water and sea salt) nightly, and KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF.

ok, thx, I know that you aren't supposed to, but it was swollen so much you could barly (sp?) see the earring. Its still kinda swollen but its better. Again, thx!!! I'll probably get it redone in a few months. or maybe my nose hmm

You say that it got so swollen that you couldn't see the earring; was it a stud? I only ask this because when i had my cartilage pierced, i had a stud. It got infected often until i finally switched from a stud to a ring. It was much easier to clean & rotate, never got infected again, and never got snagged on my hair. Sorry to hear your piercing didn't work out but hope my recommendation will help you out in the future.

Don't get it redone! I tried the cartilage in both ears and both got infected even with daily cleaning. I now have scar tissue (barely) and the piercer said not to redo it. I got my nose pierced instead and I love it!

To the first poster, how did you get your piercing done? If it was done with gun, the reason your ear might've been infected is that those old piercing guns had a tendency to crush & bruise the cartilage upon piercing. Some of the newer guns use studs that have closed backings, that is, the back of your earring should NOT allow the earring rod to go completely through it. If it does, you most likely have damaged cartilage. If you ever get it repierced, make sure that the earring back is closed, or go to a professional piercer (one that doesn't work in a mall) and have them do it with a needle and cork. That will guarantee that the cartilage isn't crushed.
