Hi,
I had my tonsillectomy at 730am today, and wanted to update you on my progress and be informative for others who will soon be undergoing this procedure.
My dad woke me up at 5am, and we got to the hospital at 6am. They brought me into pre op at about 645, and I changed into a hospital gown, layed down in the gurney, and they started my IV. Then they gave me a drug to calm me down. My legs were shaking from being nervous. Soon after, the Dr came in and was very cheerful and said everything was going to be ok. My mom kissed me goodbye, and I was wheeled into the operating room. At this point I was a bit of out it, and they pushed me over onto the operating table. I looked up and saw the big lights over me (they weren't on though). Next thing I knew was I had a mask placed over my face, and was out like a light. It all happened so fast I don't even rememeber at what point I was knocked out. It was good though, very fast.
I woke up at about 9 in the recovery room. I couldn't talk, only whisper. I tried waving my hand to get the nurse's attention, and she didn't respond (of course), so I started kicking my leg up and down on the bed to get her attention. She was a real BIATCH. She came over and said, you cannot do that, you need to behave. I looked at her and whispered, get me pain killers now, and my mom, I need my mom, I love her. So she did that. I was given 50 units of morphine. I was knocked the hell out after that! They put me in a reclining chair soon after, and I was there for about an hour. I sipped some lukewarm water. Very good for you!! Finally they took me to the bathroom to change and pee. Now, I don't know how everyone else was after their surgery, but I couldn't pee. I had that feeling where I needed to go, but it wasn't coming out. I tried and tried, and fell asleep on the toilet. My parents brought me home at about 12. I sipped some clear gatorade. Tried to go to the bathroom again, finally the bladder set free and I went, but very very slowly. It took me 10 minutes. My dad gave me some of my liquid vicodin (only 5 ml the smallest dose), and I was fine the rest of the day. I also garggled with carafate diluted in water. The dr prescribed me this because it's supposed to coat the throat and aid in the pain. I took my dose of amoxicillin (the pink liquid, which still to this day is the best tasting medicine ever...bubble gum flavor)...I've been in bed sleeping all day up until now...Here are my only chief complaints:
1) very dry tongue, and it's numb in the back...i have no saliva at all...they originally gave me an injection of something to dry out the saliva, i guess for purposes of the surgery for the dr...
2) throat hurts when i swallow, but it's like a strep throat/tonsillitis soar throat, not so bad...
3) still having problems peeing normally...i have to go like every hour, and it comes out really slowly...
4) i ate some applesauce which was mixed in with my 50 mg of vioxx...hurt when i swallowed moreso than sipping the gatorade...also had an icee which was very good for my throat...gatorade feels good going down my throat...
dr said to my parents after surgery that my tonsils were huge and very bad....also said that i might bleed tomorrow and on the 7th day, but that i tolerated the surgery well....
that's all for now, any words of wisdom?

Congratulations on your bravery and thank you for the blow by blow description. I had my tonsils out over 50 years ago, in a doctor's office with an ether rag stuffed in my face.
I forget the doctors name, hmm, Franken.. something - big headed guy, didn't talk much. :)

I knew you could pull thru it. The advice I have for you is when you take your pill meds put them in jello (non citrius flavor) it helps them just slide on down. Also is the tonsils the only thing your doctor took or did he take the adenoids?? My doc didn't take the adenoids but he did a turbents reduction. Who did your surgery???? I am now on my 5th day and let me tell you todays been the worst so far but nothing you cant get thru. My Doc told me that my tonsils were dandy's and I would probably bleed to so far I haven't. You know its so nice beeing able to swap stories with someone who has just gone thru the same ordeal as you.

Day 2
Hi,
Well I tossed and turned throughout the night. I took 10 ml's of Lortab (liquid vicodin around 11pm). Woke up this morning with a dry throat. Throat hurts the most when I swallow. However, I did try to eat a crushed up Vioxx pill in banana baby food, a BIG NO NO! Maybe there is acid in there, because holy shizznit, it was the worst! My throat started burning and aching. My dad gave me 5 ml's of the pain killers and that was that. Now I am resting comfortably. Can't whisper as much, hurts, and definitely can't talk. My staple intakes are strawberry flavored applesauce and strawberry ice (it's clear) gatorade. Overall, the pain is not as sharp or intense, except when I took the 1 bite of banana baby food. I broke my ankle a year and a half ago walking into one of my law school classes (ironic i know), and sat through the hour of class with an ankle that was swelled up 4x it's normal size. That was the worst pain I have ever felt. It so intense and I didn't even cry. And I am the biggest baby!! Something that is really helping for me, is having a silver bell by my bed, that I just tap on when I need my parents or brother. I haven't dropped any pounds yet. I actually gained 3 between Sunday and yesterday. Could it be the Vioxx? I am hoping to drop at least 10 pounds. Aren't you supposed to drop a lot of weight after this surgery? I mean if I am not eating, I should lose weight!! Oh, and I found out why I am having the peeing problem. The pain killers cause everything to be slow and delayed. It's getting better now, but I thought something went wrong with my bladder. To all of those who are getting this done, after you get the IV, and they inject you with something to calm down your nerves, it's all over pretty much. You don't feel a damn thing. Just get the morphine injection when you awake. Going to lay down now and find something on TV. I'll write more later today :) Hope you are doing better alleycat!! And in the words of Gloria Gaynor --"I will survive!"
PS--forgot to add this...Dr only took out my tonsils not my adenoids because i didn't have breathing problems etc...I think the method he used was cutting and cauterizing at the same time...Not a laser method I know that..I am also garggling with Carafate diluted in water....Supposedly it coats the tonsils and aids in pain...

Sounds like your doing fairly well. I just woke up from a nap. (After taking my pain meds I have to take a nap they make me dizzy and its just easier to sleep it off) Ouch the run in with baby food doesn't sound to good. I tried eating orange jello bad idea doesn't have to strong of a flavor but strong enough to burn. I tried soaking a biscut in chicken broth yesterday. Not something I would advise it didn't go down and Im not even going to atempt to try to eat again for a while. I don't know bout the weight thing maybe it takes a coupple of days to relize the weight loss so far I have lost 12lbs in about 5 days. Well Keep me informed!!!

Just woke up from a nap as well. I had one of those jello cream savers, strawberries n cream flavored pudding. Tasted good, and didn't hurt going down. Maybe my weight loss will take its effect in another day. Doesn't always show up on the scale right away. I would like a slurpee for dinner from 7-11. I think I am going to talk, well whisper, lol, my parents into getting one of those. My brother called my grandma on the phone for me and at least I was able so say slowly and in a low voice "I love you." I talk to my grandma everyday (I'm her favorite grandkid) and she's wheelchair bound (b/c of some strokes she had a year or 2 ago) and can't get out of the house to come see me, since her caretaker is real nasty about going places. Sucks as well. But overall, I haven't found much to do, maybe I'll turn on MTV and rot my brain. My 26th birthday is next Monday (the 22nd), so hopefully I'll be able to eat ice cream--my parents usually buy an ice cream cake for my bday. Then again it will be exactly 1 week after surgery, supposedly that's the worse day, pain-wise. Only discomfort I feel is swallowing, beverages and water, and sometimes I have to cough, and I feel mucuous in my throat. I tried looking back there (just curious to see what my mouth looks like without tonsils), but I couldn't open my mouth wide enough. I saw some white spots, I guess that's where the tonsils used to be. I am glad I got those suckers taken out. Best thing I ever did. Goodbye tonsilitis!! I'll update you later tonight. Alleycat do you have [removed]

I had my tonsils out on Friday. Really haven't been able to eat too much and today feel very sick to my stomach. Do you feel that way?
I also have a very sour taste in my mouth and nothing seems to taste good.
I've eaten Mac n'cheese (microwave kind), popcicles, cream of wheat and jello. I'm very hungry but can't get it down my throat. HOw much longer should I feel this bad. I live pain killer to pain killer.

Yikes! Sorry about your pain level. What kind of meds are you on? Maybe I am on so many that I am not in excrutiating pain, just more or less out of it. I did taste some banana baby food which killed me, and I was in pain for an hour or so and couldn't swallow at all. I've pretty much been sleeping off and on all day. I also took the Vioxx starting the 3 days before my surgery to help with inflammation. All I have consumed are 2 snack size things of jello pudding, and a bit of applesauce, some sips of gatorade. Not much really if you think about it. I definitely can't chew or open my mouth real wide. I kinda have a crappy taste in my mouth. I brushed my teeth this morning, but just the front part. Can't get to the back of the mouth. Maybe I'll have my parents give me lukewarm chicken broth and mashed potatoes. If I am sitting here not eating I had better drop some LBS!!!! How much weight have the rest of you lost? I heard days 3, 4, 5 suck b/c of the ear pain...Have you gotten to that part yet??? I am only on the day after the surgery, I am sure I have a rough road down ahead of me. The nurses from the hospital even called today, my dad spoke with them, thought it was very nice. I'd like to be able to talk, for me that is the worst. I am a big mouth and I can't even talk to anyone!!!! My cell phone keeps ringing and my parents have to take messages for me. Blah!!

I was wondering, what is the normal size of tonsils? Is an inch in length long?
Mine have big holes and almost daily tonsil stones are being formed.
Somebody even told me that normal tonsils can't even be seen in normal circumstances.

Not sure the normal size of them. Mine were very visible when I opened my mouth. Usually you can't even see them in most people. I had the holes on my tonsils too.

No problem Brandon. I'll tell you this much, the other posts I read on this board, freaked me out big time! I worked myself up into a frenzy when I went into the hospital yesterday morning. The pain is bearable, only hurts me when I swallow. I am eating very little...sipping on gatorade, icees, jello pudding, and some applesauce. For dinner I sipped on lukewarm wonton soup. I got to watch my parents eat kick *** Chinese, and all I got to eat was soup through a straw. It sucked. I love Chinese! So eat all the good stuff now, because you will be missing it later!!! But if I drop 20 lbs I'll be one happy girl!!! My cousin's wedding is next month, I want to look my best!

Yeah it will be good. Actually I am so happy I went through with the surgery. My parents wanted me to wait a few more months, but I figured with interviewing and accepting a job with a firm (I graduated law school in May), I knew it was best to do this now. With me, my tonsillitis was so unpredictable. I could go through months without having problems, and once it came it was here to stay. I always seemed to get it after I went out drinking the night before, or kissed a boy. I can't wait to go out partying and not have to worry about getting a sore throat afterwards!!! I never realized how popular this surgery was until I found this message board last week. There is so much good and informative stuff on here, it's ridiculous! This is truly a great site. I'll update more later.

Well today is day 6 for me. last night was really hard to get thru. I didn't get a lot of liquids down only bout a bottle of water, grape icee, and a coupple of popcicles. Wish I had gotton more down. Last night on my way to bed I got reall light headed and felt like at any given moment would get sick everywhere then I started sweating really bad. I quickly grabed a washcloth and went to lay on my bed. My mom was really mad when she found out what had happend she said I needed to let her know if something like that happened again. It was no biggie to me I just thought it is because I can't eat and my body is not use to that. I weiged myself this morning and I have lost about 15 or 16lbs since my pre op visit. Nice to have the weight off but it stinks not being able to eat. Now even though I do brush my teeth and my tongue I still have a yuckie taste on my toungue. Im doing a little better this morning than I was last night. I accidently sleep thru my 3 am pain meds didn't take them till 6. Opps!!!

Yeah, my throat is so dry it's killing me today. But I will only take the vicodin when the pain is unbearable. I am so tired. I must have slept for over 12 hours already today. Is that normal? Oh, and I think I realized why I haven't lost any weight. I sipped 2 cups of lukewarm Wonton soup last night through a straw. Chinese food has a lot of sodium in it. Maybe I am retaining water because of that?

That's comforting alleycat thank you. I hope the weight loss will show up soon. I was beginning to worry. I am sipping on some water through a straw as I type this to you. My throat is hurting a lot today. Started to get the ear pain. Feels as if nothing will keep my throat wet, kinda like I have a lump in the back of it. I have that horrible taste in it. Tried chewing gum, can't open my mouth that much to do it. I also yawned. Don't do that, stretches the throat and hurts it. I won't take the vicodin until I go to bed, since I am not in agony just yet, and I'd like to stay awake somewhat to watch TV tonight. I've been sleeping a whole lot though. Have you? I'm talking like close to 14 hours of sleep basically so far throughout the day.

Hi! I am going to be 38 next month and on January 15th I will go to my ENT and schedule my tonsillectomy. I have been putting it off for about 6 years now. I was scared of the pain. But I am sick of having those stones and sore throats. It is definately is getting worse over time. The one thing that has motivated me to do this finally is the weight loss. I thought I was the only one who would obsess about how much I would lose. I am so thankful that you are being open about your concern about losing the weight. I mean what a great side effect. 15 pounds would definately make me happy. My husband just informed me that he might get to go to Hawaii at the end of February. We got married there 14 years ago. I can't go looking like this. Then he wants to go on a white water rafting trip down Snake River (I think that is the name) in Iowa (??) over the summer. 15 pounds would be a great jump start. My husband wonders if I am doing this just to lose weight. It definately is pushing me to finally do it. :bouncing:
Are you guys feeling better? Was it worth it? Why did you have them out? Was it because of the stones? My doctor is going to do it the old fashioned way. Why would they take out your adenoids? I really can't wait to get this over with finally...and of course lose weight.
ShaynaPunim

Yes, I am also hoping for the 15 lb weight loss. I had the surgery on Monday, haven't noticed any changes in my weight yet, and I am barely eating. My cousin's wedding is next month and I am the maid of honor. I was on Weight Watchers, and dropped about 20 lbs this year, and had to go off of it in October because I kept getting sick with tonsillitis, and my weight fluctuated about 5 lbs. So, this surgery was planned at about a month before the wedding so that I could make up for lost time, not to mention, I'd be healthy for her wedding. I had 7-8 bouts of tonsillitis this year. My parents were against the surgery because it is evasive, and supposedly it's a bad recovery for adults. However, I am a complainer, and I am not even in that much pain. It's more discomfort for me. It's like having a bad case of tonsillitis, you can't really talk or eat, and you're basically bedridden. Something I've already suffered through many times this year. For me, it was either prolonging the surgery and continuing to get sick month to month. And just starting out as a new lawyer doesn't look very good when you are trying to get a job with a good firm and you constantly have to take off of work because you are sick. When I get sick, I am out of it for at least 5 days, not to mention I am just plain miserable.

Ok, it is Day 3 after surgery. I am in pain today. Can't really swallow well, and body aches. Not to mention it's cold in FL...upper 40's...Got on the scale, lost NOTHING! This is irking me. Then again, I have been constipated since Monday, maybe that is causing the problem too. It's very discomforting. I am about to go put on some sweats and get under the covers with my 5 mls of vicodin and sleep for a few hours. I am finally having friends over tonight to visit me, yeay! I will write more later. How are you today alleycat???

I have been reading your posts since the first one, as I am considering having my tonsils out because of these nasty tonsil stones. I had a surgery to correct my deviated septum over the summer and it was not fun, my ENT says the tonsilectomy is way worse and that I do not want to do it.
I was constipated after my surgery (the pain killers can make you constipated, not to mention not eating). The doctor said to drink prune juice for this. I waited a week before I would drink it, but when I did it worked like a charm. Tasted horrible and gave me some stomach cramping before I could go (took maybe 2 hours to work), but it sure worked. I would highly recommend this.
I don't want to make you sad or anything, but when I had my surgery, I lost 10 pounds, but gained them back as soon as I started eating again. And I did not eat a lot, as my stomach had shrunk. I was pretty disappointed, but hopefully this will not happen to you guys!
I was wondering if you can breathe through your nose after the tonsilectomy, and also if your throat is numb for long after you wake up from surgery.
I wish you all a fast recovery! Take care! :)

I never snored before my surgery, and I haven't started snoring yet. I always sleep with my mouth closed and breathe through my nose, so I don't feel affected as of yet. I also sleep on my stomach, head turned to the right, and stay in the same spot pretty much throughout the night. Today I am very weak and queasy. Ate a fat free pudding when I woke up at 11, and have been sleeping ever since (thanks to the vicodin). Woke up and felt dizzy and nauseous. Ate some applesauce, and tried some chicken noodle soup, but can't chew. Hurts too much. Started getting ear pain. Just overall feeling icky. Throat is somewhat numb, I can't feel the back of my tongue. I looked in the mirror with a flashlight, I think my uvula (the little thing that dangles) is elongated and swollen. Is that normal? By the way, don't look in your throat, it is quite ugly!!
I think it's taking its toll on me finally. I'll ask my parents to get me oatmeal from the grocery store so I can eat that later on. I think I will try using the bathroom before I resort to prune juice. I feel as if I have heartburn now, I have a burning sensation in my throat, feels like the applesauce is laying on me. BLAH!!!!

Well, my parents brought me potato soup back from the Outback restaurant after they had dinner. Could not eat it. Too much pepper and it killed my throat! So, instead I ate some more applesauce. I decided that tomorrow I will drive myself to the grocery store and get some cream of wheat, and plain yogurt to eat over the next few days. I think that will work better. I have noticed though that everything tastes horrible. Let's hope that the weight loss starts soon!!!
And I had to edit this to post the fact that my stomach hurts so bad because I haven't pooped since Monday morning before my surgery. I might have to give into getting prune juice tomorrow morning. I dont want to take anymore meds. I'd like nature to take its course but it's not like I've eaten real food in order to go.

Hi! I am finally alive and able to post on here for the day. I have been in agony all day. Terrible pain and dizziness and just an overall feeling of ill. Today was the worst day for me so far. I laid in bed all day drugged up on vicodin. I took some milk of magnesia at around 1pm and my stomach was hurting all day from not being able to go to the bathroom. I also just finally had a little bit of success in the bathroom! Just a little though, not much, but my stomach feels relieved! Nice that it took 7 hours and some oatmeal later. Praise the lawd! I have not seen any changes in the scale just yet. I am hoping that by Monday I will see something. It will be a nice bday present!! It is very weird to me, especially because I usually lose weight really easily when I get sick. Something is up with my body that's for sure. I will say though, that I was hoping for at least 10 lbs. I think my period is supposed to come this week, that will really suck on top of all of this pain in my throat.

hmmm pancakes sound good. i just took a shower and i am going to force myself to go to the grocery store to get some mac-n-cheese. i stepped on the scale, i finally lost 3 lbs! throat is still killing me. and i have terrible stomach pains. any ideas on what to buy to un-constipate myself? i was considering metamucil. i need some sort of fiber to get my bowels going. let me know your thoughts. i will post later. hope everyone is feeling well :)

Metamucil is great, but I'm telling you--prune juice! It tastes horrible but it works. I would try a glass of prune juice, and then once you go "a big one" then start having some metamucil. You'll feel sooo much beter. Just don't get an over-the-counter laxative till you try these more natural cures. Good luck and get better soon!

Well, I ate some microwavable mac-n-cheese. I love mac-n-cheese, but this tasted horrible. I mean the fact that I can't eat sucks, but when I eat, my tastes buds are so screwed up!! And it's like I want to eat, but when it comes time to physically doing it, I have no will to eat. I bought Benefiber powder at the grocery store. It should take effect. My last resort will be the prune juice. I think the Vicodin has made me depressed, I don't want to get addicted to it. Then I'll start posting on the Addiction and Recovery board. Haha! Alleycat is probably up to a 25lb weight loss already. I will post more later :)

baseballmom777 Sorry I haven't replyed till now but these last coupple days have been kinda ruff. I have now lost 24 and 1/2lbs and still going.
This is now day 9 it isn't as bad as the last coupple days have been. Friday I ran out of pain pills so my mom called the doctor he was in surgery and couldn't write me a script I needed to get the perkeset so he called in viccodin for me. the viccodin has been a little easier on my stomach. Yesterday morning I was finially able to get down a poached egg mashed but I threw it back up later that afternoon. Talk about pain. Ouch!!!Then later that night I tried a cold treat and it seemed to stay down. This is the first time I have been out of bed in 2 days so Im feeling alot better than I had. Think I might try eatting a little squashed up spagetti. I'll keep you posted!!

Damn! 24.5 lbs. Alleycat, how much did you weigh to begin with? Have you gone to the bathroom at all? I'm still very constipated.
Today is day 6. I had a very rough night last night. Started out with uncontrollable hiccups that lasted nearly an hour, then led to uncontrollable coughing, and tossing and turning all night. Finally got up at 8am and took 1tspn of vicodin, and fell asleep until 12. I was having horrible stomach pains and a headache, not to mention my throat feels like someone took a razor to it. I think I am getting my period. It came on the 24th of last month, so it's coming any day now. I had some microwavable mac-n-cheese before. Had to take 1/2 tspn of vicodin with it in order to be able to swallow. It hurts really bad when I eat. Additionally, it's really cold in my parents' house...67 degrees! Sorry to whine so much. Normally I am a very cheerful energetic person.

Doesn't your stomach hurt? Mine is hurting all the time. I hope we will be recovered within the 14 days. What do you think????
I ate 2x today, finally! Both times had mac-n-cheese. It's about the only thing I can eat. It burns though going down. I find that I have to take the vicodin first and wait about 15 minutes at least to eat. In addition, it takes me about 30 minutes to eat a small bowl of the mac-n-cheese, when normally I can chow it down in 5 minutes. It's ironic because the first 2 days I didn't feel as bad, but now eating has become much worse, it's almost like a chore. And everything I eat tastes HORRIBLE!! Oh, I finally dropped another 2 lbs today. Down 5 lbs, it's about time!!! Let's hope aunt flo comes tomorrow and then I can lose another 5!

wow day 6 and your eatting thats really good. Yea I had alot of stomach pain expecially when I was taking the perkeset with codeine because I couldn't eat anything. When I got swiched to the vicodin pills it didn't hurt my stomach as bad. Today was the first day (day 9) that I was able to really eat something and keep it down. It felt so good. Wish I could have eatten on day 6 but for me day 5,6,&7 were the worst. congrats on droping the lbs!!! Im really glad to be able to sit up strait again expecially to be at the computer desk. I couldn't get out of bed the last coupple days it was ruff, but as the days go on im doing a little better. Im looking foward to the day when I will be done with my pills and can eat on my own again!!! Won't that be Nice!!!!!!

Aside from sleeping about 14 hours a day, the rest of my time is spent sitting on the internet, IM'ing with my friends and sending emails since it's my only way of communicating. Talking hurts too much. Now I have really bad ear pain. Before I took my nightly dose of vicodin, my throat was killing me. I don't know how you didn't eat for all of those days, my stomach kept making funny noises. However, I will admit that I've gotten to the point where I've lost interest and desire to eat because of the amount of time it takes me to eat, and the pain that ensues. It takes me about 30 minutes to eat a small bowl of mac-n-cheese. Tomorrow is my birthday, and my friends are taking me out for ice cream and to a movie. I am excited about getting out. Not that I can really eat ice cream, I'll probably get sorbet. Mind you, I'll have to be drugged up on vicodin in order to get it down my throat. I also stopped drinking gatorade, and switched to water. I was finding that when I lay on my stomach as I am sleeping (which is how I normally sleep), I was getting a burning sensation in my throat that felt very much like heartburn. I wasn't sure if the gatorade was causing it. What does your pain feel like Alleycat? For me it's like someone took a razor to my throat and scraped out the insides. Comforting thought I know.

My pain use to feel like someone was taking a knife jamming it into my throat pulling it out and sticking it in again. To day is day 10 so it isn't quite as bad but it still hurts. You had a burning sensation like heartburn I did too it was horrible. Its great your friends are taking you out have a great time but make sure to take your pain meds with you just in case. I still haven't left the house since the day of my surgery. Mom is taking precausions since the flu is very high around here. Plus I lost alot of strength just laying around I can't stand for a long time or I get really dizzy. This morning mom made eggs she made me one over easy all mashed up and I was able to eat it. It tasted really good. I kept waking up last night though my throat would dry out and I would have to rewet it again to keep the pain down. I think Im going to go run me some bath water and just soak for a little while. Talk 2 ya later and Happy Early Birthday!!!

I wanted to thank everyone for all the information. I am having my deviated septum fixed and my tonsils out today at 1pm and I'm a little nervous. I took almost 3 weeks off from work and I thought that was too much, but from the sound of what everyone is writing, it might be just right. I guess I will be spending my New Year's Eve in bed with my drugs next to me-that stinks. Oh well, I am looking forward to the weight loss though. If anyone has any more advice I really woulc like to hear it, somehow reading all this makes me a little calmer-except for the replies about the pain :) Well, I guess I should start to get ready-I have to be at the hospital at 11am. Read you later.

Thank you for the response, that was very nce of you. I will give you one piece of advice, you need someone there with you through the night. I'm 26 and pretty healthy, but I couldn't stand for more then 5 minutes without my nose bleeding or getting a little lighthead, thank goodness my husband took off for a few days. I'll write more later when I can sit up for a longer period of time.

Im glad to hear you made it thru alright I had my tonsillectomy about 18 days ago. They told me days 4&5 would probably be my worst so on day 6 I thought it would be better WRONG my worse days were days 6 & 7 but each day I was able to I wrote a journal entry about how that day was. Im thinking about writting a book. If I do I want to get other peoples stories about their tonsillectomys to.Here are a few entries from my journal
*Names have been shortened to respect the privacy of my doctor. November 20th I had to go see a EENT eyes, ears, nose and throat doctor. As soon as he walked in the room he said oh no we have a problem your head is still atatched how would you like to lose it gulliteen or chainsaw?? Of coaurs I was like neither!!! He said what don't like the options then I can always send you down to flordia OJ simpson does a real nice sniping Job. Then I was like I don't think so and he said oh man you mean I actually have to do work rat's. He told me that to get him to even consider taking out someones tonsils they have to have a good story. He looke at me and said well sweetie you have a good story. There comming out of there. Ends up I have been having sleep apnea so yep tonsils are coming out tomarow!! YEEPIEE!!!
He told me all about the procedure (I'll out in another entery later) and when he was filling out the encounter form he said that he was going to put me down as being as not being sain because I actualy wanted my tonsils out. Well if he had as much trouble with his tonsils as I had mine he would know why I wanted them out so bad!!!! I have to have a urinealysis done tomarow just to rule out the chance of pregnancy in their mind
I guess when he was in the navy there was an 11 year old girl who he was going to take out her tonsils and it came back she was pregnant and Dr.G couldn't take them out I think that is so sad. I just started typing away never even relized I haven't mentioned the doctors name until now his name is Dr.G he is the first doctor to finially admit that my tonsils needed to come out. He said they do you no good after age 5. Well my bus is almost here so I gotta go!!!
Day of surgery:December 11th the night before my surgery I treated myself to a meal from captian D's and boy was it good I had a frosty from wendys 4 desert I wasn't aloud to eat after 5 only aloud to have clear liquids. I went to wal*mart and stocked up on juices, pudding, jello, and water. I even treated myself to a new robe and slippers 2 take to the hospital. Then I went home and took a bath had to brush my teeth because I wasn't aloud to in the morning because I was NPO after MN. Because if anything was in my stomach it would react with the anestetic causeing me to vomit wich could be very dangerous.
The next morning December 12th I had to be ready to leave by 8:00 we had to be at the hospital by 8:30 once there we went to the 4th floor inside the glass cubical to wait for my turn. About 5 mins later they called my name. I got up and mom came with me. Once back in the room I had to pee in a cup to rule out the chance of pregnancy of couarse it came back negitive. Then I changed into a gown and got hooked up to an IV. Once I was all ready my dad came back and joined us in the room we talked and laughed until they came to take me at 11:05.
The guy nurse who wheeled me out had blood shot eyes almost as if he had been drinking the night before but he had busted blood vessels.Dr.G came in to ask me if I owned a gun I told him no and he said good Im safe for the post op visit. He talked a few more mins and I laughed he is such a funny guy.Very nice and I have so much respect for him as a doctor.
Well then I was wheeled into the Operating room. Kinda scary there was already one lady all suited up looking ready to cut me open. The anesesiologist was so nice she got right up next to me and said I know your nervous but don't be nervous ok hunny don't be nervous. Then she and the guy nurse started straping me up to a heart monitor. I was also fastened in with a belt so I wouldn't move. The guy nurse, the anestesiologist and myself had a conversation about the beach she gave me a shot to relax me and said think that your at the beach I said I had never been. The guy nurse than said u sound like me I never went until I was 21. I never had a vacation didn't know it was because we were poor. Then the anestesiologist said I vacationed all the time we always went to west virginia.Thats the last thing I remeber about the surgery.
The surgery took about 1 1/2 hrs its only suppose to take 15-30 mins oh well. Next thing I knew I was waking up in recovery. The first few mins were werid my throat was numb from the coating they put on it but I felt very nauseated. I started to cry wich made things worse. The nurse took my hand and said your ok hun everything went fine your ok dont cry you'll just make things worse. Then she brought back a shot of I think mesisone for the nausea. She rolled me over and gave it to me in my hip. Which I thought was werid usually not always but usually they give it to you in your IV. The nurse stayed with me I think her name was D. M. She was so kind for a while she stayed at the foot of my bed kicking it ever so often to make sure I would react. Then she brought me in my parents who stayed with me the whole time.
Later the nurse and Dr. G came in my room. He wanted to know how I was doing. I wanted to know what he used on me so dad asked for me. He said he used a electrocaulterizing knife. He said it works just as well as lazers but in his opinion is better. He told me a few more things we laughed than he grabed me foot and asked if I had my post op visit set up. I said yes and he said then we have a date see ya then. Then he droped my foot and left.
After taking a pain pill they said if I thought I was ready I could leave. Of couarse I thought I was. I got ready and got dizzy very badly and very sweatie and clamy the nurse came in and said whats wrong I said I don't think Im ok she said you better lay back down she put a cloth over my head and we were there for an extra 30-40 mins. The next time we left I went out in a wheel chair the nurse helped me into the van (front seat). Then I went home!!!!!
