Hi ladybug, I'm a guy so I can't have a baby (*heehee*), but just out of curiosity, which type of cardiomyopathy do you have? Restrictive? Hypertrophic Obstructive? Dilated?

I aquired cardiomyopathy 4 months after I had a baby... but they think mine is viral, rather than postpartum.

I don't know which kind I have. My doctors think it's viral and that's pretty much all they have told me. Do you have cardiomyopathy?

Hi LisaannUT,
How did they find out you had cardiomyopathy? Did your doctors advise you that it would be alright to become pregnant again w/ this condition or it would not be a good idea? I am just trying to get some feedback from women in the same stiuation as me. I am only 30 I would like to have a baby in the near future.
Thanks

I was feeling run down, tired, just not myself. They made appts for me to go in for an MRI and an Echo to start ruling things out. Before I could get it, I passed out at work and was taken to the hospital. They did the echo and found that I had cardiomyopathy. I was positive for CMV, Coxsackie B, and EBV. My EF was only 30%. I was told not to have anymore children because of it, I had my tubes tied. I now have an EF of 50% (60% is normal),with borderline ventricular function and I have developed pericarditis and SVT as well... all being from the viruses . I no longer have active viruses in my system but have heart problems (chest pains, palpatations, dizziness, fainting, fatigue) b/c of it that I am probably going to endure the rest of my life.

Christina,
Apparently, you had left ventricle heart failure to pump adequately and more blood was/is entering the left ventricle than is pumped out causing blood/fluids to back up and leak fluids into lung tissues, heart, and peripheral areas of the body.
If the EF (fraction of blood pumped out of LV) drops below 30%, the dx would be congested heart failure and an enlarged LV. Three plus years ago I was admitted to ICU for several days with congested heart failure and an enlarged left ventricle. My edema (accumulation of fluids) was in the lungs causing a dry cough at night, choking would probably be a better description and shortness of breath...lung edema. I have never had a problem since...EF is normal as well as heart size.
Apparently you have cardiac edema, and if 5 pounds, you probably had some lung and peripheral edema as well.

I have post natal cardiomyopothy they picked it up in the ambulance after my second child I had another child 4 years later i was told not to but didn't listen had to go off my meds and i felt ok thru the whole thing except couldn't stand for long and blacked out a few times. I had a normal birth (only 2 mins) and was fine up until about 2 years ago that's when i found out that my condition had gone from mild to severe think it was more to do with my life style than having a baby. I guess it depends on how bad your condition is i mean if you have to take meds to function then it is probably not a good idea to have a baby cause you have to go off the meds while pregnant of course i have been told that anymore kids is definately out of the question and that i would have to be admittted into hospital throughout the entire pregnancy but i have symptoms now and had none when they picked it up back in 99. Had my last child in 2003 and nothin was wrong in 2004 only got bad as i said 2 years ago but i did do a lot of drinkin and i think that's why it got worse i don't think the pregnancy did anythin to me but like i said it was only mild back when i got pregnant. How bad is your condition?
