View Full Version : One big 'THUD!'

Punchy

Almost daily, I will be working away or relaxing and suddenly I will get my heart doing one big thid of a beat. It knocks the wind out of me. I recently was kep over night to monitor, but I wont know those results until Teusday. My doc, recently put me on Inderal and I find it to be keeping my heart rate capped and my BP down a little but I am always so friggin tired and I am now getting one of these thuds daily.

This entire thing is concerning to me. I am quite athletic and enjoy playing all sports almost all the time. I haven't really done anything except walking since I started taking the Inderal because of fear of what it is doing to my heart etc... My doc assures me that I can still do all those things, but I get panic attacks from the fear of what 'COULD' happen.

The thud has been happening for a month, and I dont think it happened overnight while I was being monitored. I don't drink, smoke, eat caffeine. You can bet I am a little confused and looking for some advice. This all started when my Doc found some protein in my urine and put me on the Inderal right away. Maybe this wasn't the best one? Thank you in advance.

Punchy--I'm no doctor, so don't take my response as if it's from an expert. I've had "thuds" in my chest from PVCs (premature ventricular contractions) and this MIGHT be what you're experiencing. If you have PVCs, they may show up when you get your test results on Tuesday (did you get them yet?). If that's what it is, it's generally not a life-threatening thing. Let us know if this is what shows up on your test results and then we can discuss this further. Inderal is a beta-blocker and could have been given to you for a couple of reasons, including to reduce your BP, help control PVCs (if your doc suspected them from the "thuds"), help with panic attacks. I have taken another beta-blocker called atenalol for years for all of the aforementioned reasons. It helps, but is not a cure. As for your question about the "best one," I'm not sure what you're referring to, but I'm guessing you're wondering whether inderal is the best drug for your problem. I really can't say, but probably one of the indicators would be whether you feel better when you take it. Do you? Finally, if your doc told you you can still keep up your normal routine, he's probably right. Hopefully you've told him your tired alot of the time and very worried. He should be able to set your mind at ease. I hope you feel better soon!
