The end of aug. my 12 year old had a weekend soccer tournament , between games we decided to take a walk around the waterfalls not far away. It had been a very hot weekend and durring the walk my 12 year old would have to stop and rest...I thought it was a bit odd but she had been going pretty good all weekend. When we arrived home I started to make supper and she said that she was so hungry...about 45 minutes later she sat down and said that she was very tired and could she please eat it later...this was at 5pm....we let her sleep until she woke up at 6:45pm , my husband said that she was crying for me so when i went into her room she was warm to the touch and was crying...I asked her if she felt sick to her stomach and she said that she didn't know....then I asked my husband to get her a tylonol...this is all within a 10 minute time frame and by then she couldn't sit up by herself. We carried her to the hospital and by then she had to be in a wheel chair...the dr. at this hospital didn't know what was wrong and told us to take her to one of the major hospitals in the city.By the time we arrived there it was about 8:45pm. They had 4 different dr.'s look at her...had her on I.V and they couldn't even touch her toes she would scream in pain. At 12:30am the hospital had called in 2 pediatricians ....we were terrified...they asked us a bunch of questions and kept her in for the night....she got better by the afternoon of the next day but spent altogether 10 to 11 hours in a wheel chair (or bed) as she couldn't walk, white blood cell count was up...I guess because of the infection...and she had to go 3 weeks later to get blood work done for the west nile virus which came back negative. They said to keep an eye on her but chalked it up as a virus.....
This was 4 months ago , I always have to ask her if her legs are tired and how she feels but all in all she says she is fine and gets tired sometimes and her legs get tired but her arms hurt. She would not tell me for a bit because she is scared of needles and is scared to go back to the hospital......I booked an appointment but couldn't get to see the dr. until this tuesday evening but now for the last 4 weeks or so she is getting nose bleeds....4 to 5 times a week.....and only when she blows her nose but sometimes it bleeds so heavy it will clot not once but 2 times.
I guess I have 2 questions.....(1) has anyone heard of a virus doing that to a child or anyone?
(2) The air is not dry here as of yet for the winter so is it normal or anyones child get nose bleeds so often from blowing their nose?....My daughter has never had nose bleeds until now and she is 12.
Sorry this is so long but my hubby thinks that she will be just fine and as he said the dr. will see her this tuesday night, .....I just want to know if anyone eles has gone through this.
Thanks bee

This sounds like it might be something serious...so make sure you write all of this down for the doctor. If you write it all down you won't forget it while you are in there. I know how that feels, my daughter has Epilepsy, and I come out of the doctors thinking...I should have said this or that. So PLEASE make sure you tell him EVERYTHING you can remember. Also, have a talk with your daughter before you go in and tell her that she NEEDS to be completly open and upfront with the doc. I have to tell my son this before we go in. They don't always want to be open with the doc! lol
I truly hope it is nothing, but with they symptoms you are describing, I would be insisting that something be done to find out what is going on if anything.
good luck!

Thanks lindy,
I am glad that you reminded me to write things down :) I am keeping a good eye on her now for sure...sometimes I wouldn't realize how many nosebleeds that she would have as she would try to hide that too....not at first but for the last couple of weeks I would have to ask her or find tissue paper in the garbage with the blood on them...blood specks left over in the sink or baseboard of the counter in the washroom that she would miss while trying to clean it.
This might very well be nothing but it also might be something..my friend told me that is how her neice started off with cancer. I don't think that she has cancer , maybe another virus? I am not sure there has been so much going on with my family lately that half of the time I don't know if i am coming or going. There are certainly alot of scary flues etc going around.I will let you know what the dr. thinks when we get in to see her. :)
Thanks again ,

I dont want to alarm you, but my daughter was having LOTS of bad nose bleeds when she was 5, and her Pediatrician sent her right in for leukimia testing, as that is sometimes a good indicator. It was a simple blood test that took 2 days to come back. Two days of hell, and thank goodness she was ok, and her nosebleeds cleared up. But you may want to discuss it with a Dr., as mine was immediatley concerned with my daughters nosebleeds.
Also, at 12, there is ALOT of change in hormone levels, and fluctuations, it may be something as simple as her body adjusting to changing levels. Keep on top of it.

Well this evening is the dr. appointment.....I hope that I find some answers for sure , about an hour ago she started complaining that her arms and legs really ached.....they hurt....I felt her head and she feels warm to the touch...she just doesn't feel good :(.
She said that she wanted something to eat and then just like before...she wasn't hungry....that is when the arms and legs started to ache.
I am at my witts end as I am getting flash backs from this past aug. I just went to check up on her and she is awake as she had dozed off on the couch...she just blew her nose and had a bit of blood come out....she hadn't had a nosebleed since the day before yesterday. she said that her arms and legs are not hurting now but that her head hurts......I am so scared that any moment now she is going to start crying and won't be able to walk or sit up again......
I needed to say all of this , to get it out .....I will post this evening after the dr. appointment... Maybe I am over reacting because of what happened in aug but I can't help it and I couldn't get an appointment sooner to see the dr. and if I had taken her back to the hospital they probably would have said it was not an emergency with the nosebleeds etc to go and see our family dr.

Hi momof3 and everyone....just got back, my daughter has a dry spot inside her nose so that is what is causing her nosebleeds she has to apply vaseline 2 times a day just around the inner part of the nose a bit.
She should have had another follow up since the last blood work ( we saw this dr.after her sickness in aug so I guess the hospital prior should have given us a form for that besides the one for the west nile virus test) This dr tonight is sending her for a complete test on everything from white blood count,thyroid,iron,etc.......I am so relieved!!!!......I have to have my blood work done for my thyroid again so we will both be going at the same time but we can't go in until the 1st week of jan. because of the holidays.
I will keep you posted......and momof3 and lindy:)......thanks for helping me through this.
