There are NO set of symptoms that are definitive to HIV. However, there is a period called ARS where OCCASIONALLY symptoms can be seen, but not always, and not necessarily all symptoms, so PLEASE bear that in mind.

ARS symptoms generally occur between 2 and 4 weeks after exposure, and the main symptom is fever, and swollen lymph nodes. However, a flue like illness is reported, body aches, fatigue, sore throat, high fever, also like Mono. These can last a few days to a week, be very severe or very light. And, PLEASE keep in mind, MANY MANY people have NO symptoms at all, and MANY MANY people THINK they have symptoms and turn out HIV negative, so this is NOT a good indicator to base your HIV status on.

As HIV begins to progress into AIDS there are MANY diffrent symptoms, some wich ARE good indicators of HIV, but even in some cases turn out to NOT be HIV related....So, like you said, the BEST and ONLY sure fire way to know, is to be tested. And be safe.
