Hello,
I'm wondering if anyone can shed some light on my reaction to missing one day of Aciphex after approximately 8 weeks of use. When my GP first put me on Aciphex for acid reflux, I thought he was nuts. I had none of the classic symptoms and my only complaint was a lump in my throat and the inability to sleep. Since then he has gone on to diagnose me with GERD - vasomotor rhinitis and hyperractive airway disease. He put me on seven different meds to help with the GERD, reduce the inflammation and help me sleep - Aciphex 20 mg, Allegra, Singulair, Advair, Nasacort, Sudafed and Restoril. This is mind boggling to me!
I also suffer from hormonal migraines and use an estrogen patch. At the first sign of a migraine, I am to take 800 mg of ibuprofen, then Imetrix if that doesn't help. I've been doing this for about four years now.
Typically, I have an iron stomach and can eat most things. However, since starting all this medication within the last eight weeks, my stomach is killing me. I've asked him if this combination of multiple meds is the cause and he says "No, in fact, the Aciphex should help." Yesterday I didn't take the Aciphex and during the day I began having heartburn and a very painful stomachache. I loaded up on the Tums and that helpled slightly. Today, I took the Aciphex and am still feeling miserable.
I've never had a stomach problem before. I've had some IBS, but that hasn't been too bad lately. I've also been losing weight, but chalked that up to stopping Neurotin, which I had been taking for the migraines.
After eight weeks and feeling worse than I did when I first went to him...he has requested that I see a gastroentrogist to have a both the tube down the throat (can't remember the name) and a colonoscopy. Also, when I expressed concern about the Restoril, which I understand is highly addicitive and I'm fearful of - he then added Axiety disorder to my diagnoses! This is a legitimate concern as far as I am concerned!
I'm just so confused. So many things are going on. It seems strange to me that he is treating me for something for which I had no symptoms, yet when I didn't take the very medication that it's supposed to help...I am feeling miserable! Does this make any sense to anyone?! Thanks in advance.

I think that your doctor adding Anxiety disorder to your list of diagnoses was so stupid. Of course you're going to be concerned about medication your taking, and as a doctor, he has to understand that. I would definitely be concerned if my doctor put me on something that was highly addictive!
Let me tell you that about a month ago, I was in the same boat. I had no idea what was wrong with me. I was having terrible chest pain, acid reflux that was actually coming up into my throat, I couldn't fall asleep unless I was sitting all the way up, I felt like I had something in my throat every time I swallowed (to the point where I couldn't eat anything), and I was feeling short of breath (but still having the ability to talk and everything). My pediatrician told me that it was GERD and put me on Nexium. My ENT put me on Medrol for the inflammation in my throat. Then, I was also on Advair and Nasacourt for my shortness of breath. He also put me on something to settle a queasy stomach, which I'm not sure of the name.
One day, I forgot to take the stuff for my stomach and my stomach started hurting really bad. It took three days for it to finally feel better. So, I understand what you're going through. You very well could have GERD, but the colonoscopy and endoscopy should rule out everything other than GERD.
Best wishes,
Haileigh

Thanks for your reply, Haileigh. So I guess my doc is not so off base afterall, huh? I was really just going through the motions and had no intentions of having the tests done. I was convinced I did not have GERD. Sounds like I had better schedule them and be sure nothing else is going on.
I've been so busy looking at the hormone angle because of my migraines, that I even wonder if they could be contributing to this as well? Anyone make any comparisons with hormones and GERD? I do know that when my estrogen is low, I get inflammation. Sigh. Thanks Haileigh.
