I was just diagnosed with this today and was wondering if anyone knows what the prognosis is for a 40 year old diabetic? Do I have a chance of living to see old age? I'm pretty scared.

Are you being medicated? Ccb's and a diuretic? Also potassium, its very important. My Husband was dx w/ chf 4 yrs ago..we watch his meds /weight/salt intake and breathing /. If you are on diuretics be sure you take potassium, it can threaten your life if not. My husband nearly died 2 yrs ago due to lack of potassium. But w/ care you may live a very long time. At least this is what we were told. Hope this helps,Lupines

Do you know your ejection fraction (EF)? Do you know your average blood pressure reading? Is your heart rhythm under control? Does your heart beat nice and calmly and evenly? Do you also have coronary artery disease (CAD) with the CHF? Do you also have atrial fibrillation with the CHF?
There are several stages of CHF. CHF refers to a heart that is weakened and enlarged. How you will do going forward depends upon how advanced your CHF is. If you have mild to moderate CHF then your prognosis is good for the future, depending upon being on the correct medications, getting the correct amount of exercise, having a heart friendly environment, and having the right diet. Even with advance CHF, like I have, the prognosis is good, but it is a full time job staying ahead of the disease.
I've had advanced CHF for over 15 years, and am still hanging in here.

According to the 1999 Heart Failure Consensus Recommendation, "Calcium antagonists should not be used for the treatment of heart failure."
Is your husband on a CCB?

What is the cause of the chf i have dialated cardiomyopathy
The most common cause of CHF is ischemic heart disease, which in essense is blocked arteries. There are other causes such as untreated, uncontrolled high blood pressure.
My CHF came from an untreated tachycardia. My heart beat at a steady, strong 160 bpm for eight months, 24 hours per day. A heart that can't rest, and doesn't beat properly, like mine, will weaken over time.

Thanks to everyone for the replies. I don't know a lot right now, I have Lasix to take to get rid of the edema, and then I have to see my doc on Monday. She said once the swelling goes down, she'll put me on a beta blocker. I had a chest xray and an EKG yesterday - EKG was fine but xray showed fluid on the lungs. She didn't say if it showed an enlarged heart. I have diabetes which apparently, this is a complication of.
Doc is setting up an appt. for an echocardiogram and a referral to a cardiologist. I'm sure further testing will tell more. I'm not overly symptomatic, just have swelling in ankles and legs and a bit of a dry cough. No chest pain, no coughing up anything etc. A bit short of breath after exertion - which I'd thought was from being out of shape!
Feeling a bit better today but am emotional - crying off and on. I can be fine for a while then all of a sudden break down. Going to try and enjoy Christmas. :)

Man! With all that junk going into your system, you heart has got to be jumping all over the place all of the time! If you are not having major side effects from all those meds, you've got to have a body of steel.
If they are not worried about your CHF and your Afib, why do they have you on so many drugs? Sounds to me that they are just throwing a medicine cabinet at you, hoping it works long enough for your check to clear.
Would you mind saying the dosage of each med, and your medicine schedule? Do you take all of the meds at the same time?
Also........ if they can't find a cause for your CHF, I'd be willing to bet that your heart became weakened, over time, by a constantly erratic heartbeat and/or high blood pressure. When you listen to your heart does it beat nice and peacefully, and evenly, without jumping, or skipping, or racing, or thumping, or pausing? Sometimes, as with some forms of Afib, the erratic nature of the heartbeat is not always that noticeable. It would show up on a 24 hour holter in an excessive number of ectopic beats and ST irregularities.
Do you know your average blood pressure? If I were you I'd get a good digital BP guage and take my blood pressure three times a day for a month, in the morning, before lunch, and before going to bed. That way you'll get some idea of your daily blood pressure.
Regards, and the best of the holidays to you and your beer. :)
