I wondered if anyone has found a source - book, website, company, person - who is a helpful source for what healthcare options are available for people who need to pick up coverage not through their employer?
I know someone that I would like to be able to give info to - who, due to failing health, needs to come back from abroad...but is staying there due to having health insurance THERE, not HERE. She has a husband and 3 young kids...and her husband is seemingly not doing anything to try and relocate them to get her better healthcare...all the insurance in the world doesn't help if you can't get the healthcare! (I'm on my soapbox, sorry.) She is in the Ukraine now, and has to fly back and forth to Germany currently to see specialists. They say she needs to come back home or she is not going to get better...and will keep getting worse....
I can't tell her what to do, and she feels "stuck" - but I thought if I could at least show her there are options...she could make an informed decision.
I wonder if she should try for medicaid, or disability? Is coverage likely only as a single parent? Will they find coverage as a family? Her parents are about the go under Medicare - can you add dependents under Medicare as you can under other types of policies? Sometimes, policies will let you add siblings or parents you have custody of. Unfortunately, mine does not. Her husbands family simply do not agree that they should come home. They are not an option for help.
Any input would be appreciated. My frame of reference is limited to mainly group based policies, though I'm in the process of applying for medicare disability.
Happy Holidays, Katherine
