Hi--yes I got my user name changed, but you'll know who this is :)
I just got back from my post-op appt with the ENT regarding my tonsillectomy which I had 11 days ago. He said I am doing very well, and healing nicely. Scar tissue is starting to form, and I can go back to eating regular foods, but he said to take it easy over the next few weeks. My stomach is still messed up ever since I took the milk of magnesia, but hopefully now that I am done with the antibiotics and will stop taking the pain killers, it should be ok. I am still having a tad bit of discomfort, can't yawn or sneeze without there being pain, but I am doing well for the most part. It's amazing how different I feel now versus how I felt 4 days ago on my bday. Only real complaint is the sensitivity that's still there when I swallow, and my ears are bothering me now. I also feel as if I always have something stuck in my throat. Hopefully that will go away with time. The dr said my tonsils were quite nasty when he removed them, they were filled with a lot of pus, etc. How are you feeling alleycat? Any better? Oh, and I keep losing weight!!! Each day I am getting on the scale, I lose about a lb. I dropped another 3 lbs in the last few days. Finally down 10!!! Let's hope I keep it off. I think instead of going back on Weight Watchers, I am going to try the South Beach Diet. What do you all think?

Hey Im so glad you are doing better!! My Post-Op visit is tomarow I will let you know how it goes. Right now we are in the same boat. I am finially off the pain meds. Christmas day was when I took my last one because it hurt to eat. I tried to eat meat but I dont think I am quite ready for that. And I can't eat spicy foods because it burns other than that I have done pretty well food wise. The only pain I really have is ear pain!! Again my left ear is hurting worse than the right one. I wonder why it has been that way?? Swallowing is still a bit uncomfrotable but nothing I can't survive. Since I started eatting I have only gained back about 2lbs not too bad I hope it stays that way. All in all the pain was worth it because this morning I got a hug from this guy I like !!! Well keep me posted!!! Alleycat

Yes, I am having the ear pain too!!!! It's so irritating, and to be honest, I haven't slept well in the last 5 days for some reason. I keep tossing and turning at night and I am finding it takes me 2 hours to fall asleep sometimes. I will wake up a couple of hours later and get up to pee, then toss and turn for an hour or so, and then finally fall back asleep. I am still having the eating issues, at times I am starving, then when I eat, I lose my appetite because nothing tastes good and it still hurts to swallow. Yawning and sneezing are a pain for me as well. I keep my mouth closed when I yawn, it's that bad! I thought I'd be able to drink by New Years, but fat chance, I might just be sitting home this year AGAIN with my parents. Last year I had a really bad case of tonsillitis--that's when all of the misery started. I had headaches the last 2 days, but that was probably vicodin withdrawal I am assuming. Let's hope in another 2 weeks I am ready to have some fun and have a cocktail! It will be nice not to wake up the next day with a sore throat. I will say this though--I am still dropping some lbs. Down 11lbs. I think it was all of the gatorade I was drinking during the first 4 days that caused me to retain water. I would like a glass of low acid OJ, but I am afraid it will burn my throat, so I am not going to take a chance. However, I will say that it is getting better with each passing day, so that is good. Have you noticed that you constantly have dry mouth and still have that horrible icky taste in your mouth Alley? I seriously hope the rancid taste goes away soon. I don't want to get too close to anyone and have them run away from my bad breath!!

I don't blame you for not taking the chance on the orange juice just yet beleive me when I say it will still burn very badly. I have been having trouble sleeping to I figure it has something to do with all the pain meds we were taking now that were off it may be harder for us to sleep for a few more days. I think today is day like 16 I think. The icky taste in my mouth is only with me during the morning now but I will be glad when it is completely gone along with the pain. Did your ENT go over everything that went on during surgery?? I hope mine does. I find everything that has happend very facsinating (and painful) I want to go into the medical feild so Im kinda werid like that. About how long were you in his office because I would like to make plans to take my mom out and I would like to estimate on the amount of time it will take. Also one more question did you find out why you were having more trouble with your one side than the other??? The huge brusie on my arm from the IV is almost gone now. I know this sounds weird but I took pictures of my tonsils when they were very inflamed and I took another picture about day 4 after my tonsillectomy and I also took a picture of the bruise on my arm when it was at its worse what can I say Im weird!!! I think your right about drinking Im not sure if your going to want to try it for new years it would probably burn. I know thats the one type of drink my ENT told me I would have to do with out for a while (wich really didn't bother me seeing as how Im under age anyhow). I usualy drink sparkling apple cider Im not sure if Im even going to do that this year or not. Well I probably have boared you enough with my jaboring. Alleycat

The ENT was pretty short with me on Friday. He looked in my throat, said I am healing nicely, and that was pretty much it. Does one side of your throat look different from the other? My left side has what looks like remnants of my tonsils, but on the right side there is nothing there. I wasn't sure if that is abnormal. I still have a small scab left on the left side of my throat. It hasn't fallen off yet, probably in the next few days. Tomorrow will be day 13, so it's not really that far along in my recovery, and I am feeling at about a 85% level of energy. I mean, I don't think I'd be up for a late night of drinking and dancing, but I am pretty much back to where I was before. Although, my eating is still taking time. I asked the ENT about the surgery, he said my tonsils were huge and nasty, and a lot of nastiness came out when he took them out. I am assuming the nastiness was the pus? He had other patients to see, so my appt was a little rushed, lasting no more than 5-7 minutes, because he was behind in the schedule. The only picture I have of my tonsils is when I had a bad case of tonsillitis back in October with the white pus spots on them. My mom took a zoomed in pic of them with her digital cam. Let me say, they are FREAKISH!!! Let me know what your ENT says, I am curious to hear. My ears are still popping, at times I hear a fluttering noise in my ears, kinda like they have their own heartbeat. It's weird, but I am still not sleeping quite well. Hopefully in another few days I will get back to my normal sleeping schedule. Usually when I am tired, I fall asleep within 15 minutes of my head hitting the pillow. Now, I am tossing and turning for almost 2 hours. Oh, and I forgot to add that I have been taking 2 tylenol during the day, and that helps with the pain. Crap, I just sneezed and that HURT! Let me know how it goes tomorrow :)

Hey... you should both check out the www.tonsil.org site. It has a video of the surgery that you have gone under. Just open this sight and go the the "Surgery" portion. I had my tonsils removed on 9 Dec and I used this sight as my guidance. I am all clear now and can relate. I lost a total of 17 lbs and I am on the way back up. I personnally didn't want to lose weight (I am 5'10 weigh 245). I am into the whole bodybuilding thing so the weight loss set me back some. Anyways, check out the sight... the surgery portion is really cool. My throat is healed but for some reason when I am drinking my water quickly it feels as though it is coming back up my nasal passage. Any of you had this feeling yet? Just checking and if you got any questions, please fire away. Thanks and good healing!

Yeah... it was cool to watch for me too but a pain to deal with afterwards huh? I had my follow-up today and the doc cleared me to do what I want. What got me mad was that he said a tonsillectomy is no real big deal. He said it is kind of right there with scraping your knee. It was all I could do not to really let him know in no uncertain terms that a tonsillectomy and a knee scrape are NO WHERE NEAR THE SAME.
I am in an isolated area of Japan (I am a military officer) so the ENT doc flew in to do my surgery and my follow-up was with just my family practitioner. He just don't know. I hope all goes well with the follow-up. After my surgery I actually had the laboratory bring me my tonsils in the formaldehyde so I could see them. I really wanted to wish them good ridence for all the trouble they caused me for 30 years. I am 35 and lived with tonsilitis forever. I am sleeping good now. No waking up with large amounts of mucous either. I am beginning to think it was worth it. If you had asked me the first four days after surgery, I would have told you otherwise. This sight really kept me sane through the recovery.

Well I went to my post op visit today and the doctor said everything looks good. He told me to open up and it was really weird because around my mouth started to spasm but he said that was normal. He told me I can basicly do whatever now and that by the end of next week I should be just about normal. However he said that I could still feel restless and tired for about another month to long if you ask me!!! First thing he asked me is if I hated him yet. Everything on my path lab came back alright wich I was very glad to hear!!!

Oh I almost forgot I talked to my ENT about the one sided pain he said it could be caused by the shape of a tonsil maybe they had to cut deeper to get the tonsil out and he said it also could be caused by chronic infections changing the shape of your tonsil wich can make them harder to get out. He said in my case it was more than likely caused by the chronic infection. Did they tell you how big your tonsils were when they took them out??

no, he didn't tell me how big mine were, but he said they were huge. i am feeling a lot better today, in fact, when i sneezed, it didn't hurt at all. i also fell asleep much faster last night. i think with each passing day i am getting much better. my appetite has come back, but i am just too paranoid to eat salad or anything super heavy on my stomach. i am just taking it easy for the most part. i am tired all the time it seems, even if i get 7 hours of sleep a night, but before the sugery, i was always tired too. i think in another month we will feel a big difference. i am just really glad i got this done, because in the long run, it will benefit me. i won't have to worry about getting sick, or having to deal with being bedridden for 5 days (which is what always happened when i got tonsillitis).

My doctor told me that my tonsils were like 2.0 cm's I think. Man must be nice I sneezed last night and thought I was going to die!!!!!!!!! I haven't been sleeping well at all and I am very moody from the lack of sleep. Dr.G (my ENT) said it could be another month before the tiredness goes away!:(

I am glad to hear you had a good New Years. How many weeks has it been since you surgery? What were the worst days? I go to the doctor on the 15th. I am quite excited to finally get rid of these huge buggers. I hate that taste in the back of my throat. The pain after surgery will be worth the life time of freedom from digging that crap out of my tonsils and getting sore throats. I will let you know about WW. My husband wants join the Discovery Channel Challege. You go weight in at the Discovery Store in the mall and they will give you a 3 month pass to Balley's Fitness and a dietician will look over your eating habits and develop an eating plan for you. I said as long as I can weigh in without him knowing what it said. I will keep you updated.

how did you find out about the discovery channel challenge? do you have to pay to work out at ballys? i like the concept, but i dont want to do their diet plan, i am ok with weight watchers...there is a bally's by my parents house...i could look into it...i wanted to join a gym, probably la fitness, but i just dont have the funds right now...i might use my chanukah money though and just do it...
tomorrow will be exactly 3 weeks since i had my surgery...i can't believe how time has flown by...i am feeling very healthy and good...even had some booze last night! hehehe...
worst days were the weekend after my surgery...i had my surgery on a monday, so fri-sun really sucked, that was the most pain...alleycat is more informative about the pain though...she kept a journal she said...i think she had a worse recovery than me however...but i am 26, so i dont know..
