Does anyone know of anything that would be safe for a 16 yr. to help with memory? I am in desperate need. My son has ADD and has LD. He is failing school. He knows the material the night before, the morning of tests, and then gets a failing grade. I am at a loss of what to do or try.
Any help? I really am desperate!
Thanks!!

When looking at aproblem with learning and memory especially with something like ADD it becomes more necessary to look at elimination from the diet first and then once food issues are resolved you can then think about supplimental therapy.
It's really important to get back to a core level so you need to reassess the diet factors.
What's your son eating the day before his tests. what's he eating while he's studying?
If he's going for high sugar treats while studying he's likely to feel like he's making huge progress because glucose fuels the brain. However, when the glucose levels drop drastically he's more than likely to suffer the ever well known brain fog.
So the remeddy for this is to begin diet modification
and work with dietary cravings to satisfy the need with out the destructive element.
You might also want to look at foods that process the sugars more slowly and remember to always balance any sugar consumption with some protein.
I'm of pretty simple thinking when it comes to suppliments etc...Pick a few things that have a good solid consistent track record and avoid all confusions by ignoring complicated therapys. For someone with ADD complicated is the last thing they need to get better because complicated just won't get done with regularity. Since that's a big problem with ADD folks, why set up the frustration level and shoot the healing program in the foot before it gets a chance to be effective. So the more simple and minimal you keep your sons healing program, the better his chances for success.
For all people looking for better health, exercise is essential. Most people say they exercise. They don't.
They think about exercise 4 days out of the week but they actually don't do much about it.
Getting an indoor stationary bike with dual movable
handles is the perfect exercise for most people. It's simple. It's easy. It's available when the burst of energy arrives and weather is never an excuse.
Plus with the movable handles you get a good cardio work out.
So incorporate some good dietary changes, get exercise, even just 5 minuites a day or every other day, and add one suppliment....FISH OIL...
and see how things go.
Make sure your son eats a good protein enriched breakfast on the day of the test and WATCH THE SUGAR.
No pancakes on powder sugar French Toast on test day.
Good Luck.

P.S. My ADHD child is now a young adult.
I survived and so did he.

Thank you for your reply. I will have to monitor his diet better. Also after reading your post I realized that he struggled a little 1st/2nd quarters, but not as bad as 3rd quarter. He had phys. ed 1st period 1st/2nd quarter so I will tend to agree with you that physical exercise does help. Thank you for advice. I will not let it fall on deaf ears!!

If he has ADD, then concentration during tests might be more of a problem than memory as such.

Yes, good replies.
Get the diet thing right and consider using a high quality multivitamin/mineral supplement. Then a complex or formula designed specificaly for brain enhancement; a "nootropic" complex.

just a quick update. He has been on fish oil ( 1000 mgs.)1x/day and ginko Biloba 3x/day for about 5 weeks now. He has been going to "vision therapy" for about 4 weeks now.
Update now:
He hasa 4 classses all together. He has gone from low D's in all to mid range C's in 3 of them, and the 4th he has a mid range B. The vision thereapist feels (as we do now too) that his ADD might be a misdiagnosis, and she truly believes he was misdiagnosed withthe LD. He is a very bright child. I never believed he had LD, but did show very mild signs of ADD. I am so very unsure now as the meds. he was always on NEVER gave us the results we were promised. He continued to struggle no matter what meds. he took.
He is my son again. We all are alot happier. He is getting his self esteem back as he doesn't feel like a loser. He is actually anxious to get his test results back now. He comes home & hangs them up on the frig. He calls his grand parents to tell them his grades. He used to go to his room and cry, call himself a stupid, dumb kid. I cannot tell you how happy he is now. Only 3 more years of school to go and I feel these being the hardest years will end up being his easiest.
Thanks to all the replies.

Great news about your son.
If the current mode of operation works don't mess with it.
Keep solid and steady and only look for different answers if the current mode stops giving the results you and your son need.
Success is a wonderful thing.

kat721...what are your opinions on the ginko biloba? I didn't see alot of bad side effects on the sights I looked on. I am wondering what is worse at this point...the meds. that I feel were killing my son or a herbal help that "might" have side effects? I am sure none above is the answer, but your opinion matters.
Any insight or anyone elses would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance :)
