I have outpatient surgery for a kidney stone next friday the 9th. I received a bill from the hospital asking for $185 up front. Is this typical procedure? Never had outpatient surgery before.

I have had two out patient surgeries and both hospitals asked for some payment up front until they found out the type of insurance I have. It depends on your type of insurance on whether you have to make some payment up front or not. If you have a number for your insurance you can call and talk to them about this to see what their policy is.

I recently had outpatient surgery to have my tonsils removed and they required a $200 downpayment. With our insurance we pay 250 in medical bills per year before the insurance will pick up the tab and since we already paid 50 on and emergency room visit we had to pay the other 200.

I have met my deductable. It pays 90%. I guess the bill I got is for the other 10%. Just never got a bill prior to hospital before. Bills usually come a month or more later. Guess things have changed.
