Anyone have any quick fixes for a wry neck? I haven't been able to turn my head to the left for two weeks. I've tried massage and ice packs but they haven't helped much. I can't take medication because I have an ulcer but can tolerate a couple of Tylenols.

SARALY-
No wonder you haven't had much relief....stay away from ice packs and cold!!!
Wry neck needs heat and warmth and with early intervention usually clears in a few days. Since you've been self-treating now for two weeks, maybe it would be wise to see your doctor or an orthopedist (if you have one) who can tell you how to apply heat properly and how often...Also you may benefit from some home exercises. But don't fool around with any you find on the internet without imput from a professional. You might make things worse. Even applying heat wrongly can do some damage.(I'm not sure if you need moist or dry heat, nor how long you need to apply it or how often.) Too much can make tissues swell, and again, perhaps worsen the situation. See a doc!

P.S. With your ulcer, are you allowed to take ibuprofen? It's better for muscle spasm than Tylenol.

Good luck!

Thanks for your response! I'll try the heat and see if I can take ibuprofen. I use ice packs for migraine and it has always helped so I thought it would help for wry neck too.

I don't have an ulcer but do have bouts of wry neck, muscle twitching and painful spasms elsewhere in the body.

I supplement with calcium and magnesium (nerve function etc), valerian (relaxation, a natural root). When the muscles are tight and cramped I use a moist heating pad, during the day, a soft cervical collar when the neck is really bad. I stay in the shower longer, w/a warmer temp set to pulse on and around the area that's tight for a good while. I use a neck roll at night instead of a pillow and sometimes use no pillow at all and that seems to bring some relief from the tightness and neck discomfort. Hydrotherapy, gentle massage followed by moist heat with cal/mag at night (also). You might benefit from the use of pain patches. They deliver that medicine directly rather then via GI tract. I've used them too with anti-inflammatory's. You need to work the therapy's through the muscle and continue. As you regain flexibility, perhaps very gentle range of motion exercises may help better flexibility. That has helped me. If you do that you must not over-stretch, that can create more problems then it's worth. Gentle flex, maintain, slow release.
