My brother is a single parent with a daughter who just turned 13 and started her period on Friday. Today he called asking me if she should be allowed to use tampons. I know I hated pads but didn't remember how old I was when I started using tampons. Any moms out there have any suggestions?

I don't see any reason why she shouldn't be allowed to use them. I wish I had when I first started. And once I started using them I refused go back to pads. They're horrible.

I'm not a mom either, but if the girl wants to use tampons, then she should use them. When i first started menstruating, i was scared of using tampons so i used pads. When i first wore a pad i cried because it felt like a diaper. Soon after, i began to wear tampons and they were much more comfortable.
Nowadays they're making really skinny tampons, aimed to help younger girls get more comfortable with the idea of using them. The main brands such as Playtex and Tampax both make a slim fitting tampon. Also, one with a plastic applicator will make it easier and (in my opinion) more comfortable to insert. Good luck. :)

Hi there, I just wanted to say that my daughter has not started her period yet but to get her informed we looked at her different options on the internet by surfing for brand name pads and tampons. After reading up on her 2 options she decided for now (when she starts) that she is going to go the pad route.
I left the decision up to her. She might change her mind when the time comes but that really helped for her to be more informed.:)

My mom MADE me use pads for years and I was miserable the whole time (I had really heavy and frequent periods). Finally when I started high school there were the tampon machines and I was able to use tampons. I would buy dollars worth at a time until she finally found out and would buy them for me. Using tampons was such a freedom for me. I would let her choose!!

He should buy both until she figures out what she likes to use the best.

My mom always discouraged the tampons. She never said I couldn't use them, but she just said she didn't like them. So I suffered through pads from sixth grade on until my senior year of high school. I would actually stay home sick on my heavy days because it was so disgusting. I felt really quite liberated I finally used them. So I would give her both options and explain how they work and let her decide for herself.

Just wanted to add that Tampax makes a tampon kit for beginners, they are made for young girls and also has a little booklet that explains everything in their terms. Would probably really be helpful since she is being raised by her Daddy! :)

My mother had me on tampons from the start. My preference is tampax. I've never found a brand I liked better. I've heard some women say they hurt, but my mom dispelled that right from the start by starting me with the juniors and moving up from there, as long as they're inserted/positioned properly, they shouldn't hurt and if they do, it's usually more of an awareness that they're there rather than actual pain.
She told me that wearing pads was like wearing diapers and how much she preferred the mobility, freedom, and lack of anxiety with tampax. I agree completely.

For me pads were a little less intimidating when I began my period... but you should be able to use them at any age.

I don't like tampons, they never seem to be comfortable...so i stick with pads. He should get her both and let her try both and see which she prefers, Get her tampons made for young girls, maybe even a woman to talk to about it if her mother is not in the picture. At 13 she may not be ready to use tampons, i know i wasn't...so let her decide.

I started out using pads but switched to tampons after a few months.
I would say let her use what she wants but she needs to be explained the proper way to use them and that she should change them at the longest 8 hours.
one tip.... although tampax does make the beginner kit I HATE TAMPAX!! the paper applicators are hard to hold on to and when inserting I can never get a good enough grip on the applicator to get the tampon to come out.
Kotex makes the best tampons I feel because the applicator is plastic and has a lip on the end to hold on to during insertion.
She needs to be told also that she can use lubrication like ky etc to put in the tampon if she is dry etc.
She should probably be shown how to use it then the person wait on the other side of the door inicase she has any issues?
I was a virgin when I started wearing tampons and they did not hurt ( I wore slims )
Just my 2 cents =)
let her choose !

I was probably about 13 when I started using tampons.. Probably just as long as the girl knows how to use them and how to take care of herself... She'll be fine! :)

Your friend ought to buy her an assortment of products so she can see what she likes. I have really heavy periods and use both tampons and pads. The ultra-thin pads are far superior to regular ones, or even thin ones. The Stayfree Ulta-Thin Overnight Long ones are great because they work when you're horizontal!
As far as "wings" go, I find that unless they're for overnight when there's a good chance of springing a leak, they're just kind of irritating. They make you sweat under the elastic of your undies!
I like OB tampons, because they don't leak, unlike those godawful Tampax. They come with or without an applicator. The kid might have more luck at first using the kind without the applicator - I think they're more comfortable to insert with my finger than with an applicator, but some people think it's kind of icky. There's a slender one for youngsters like her, but there's also a mega super-duper one (the purple) that are the absolute best thing on the market for very heavy flow.
Just out of curiosity, has anybody tried those "Instead" things?

When I was 13 I knew that my period was going to come soon. I had an older sister who used tampons, so I took a few and went into the bathroom to practice. I wanted to see if I could use them. After a few tries I had them mastered. Of course I didn't leave them in me. Right away I would take them out. The funny thing about this though - on the last practice try, I pulled out the tampon and there was dark brown blood on the very end. I knew I was going to get my period before my first period came! The next day, my period came and I've always used tampons since.

I started out with pads and moved to tampons...I think some people are under the impression that using a tampon will take your virginity (at least I have heard some parents I know say that) and it is absolutely not true...but anyway I agree, this is a personal decision she needs to make. I couldn’t imagine leaving my house in a pad on a "heavy" day....and I am not in school anymore but I can remember those days before I discovered tampons and they were messy...it sometimes got on my pants and I was so afraid someone might notice...tampons made me more confident.
ashtonsmommy: i agree! i love kotex, I started out with them and they are absolutely perfect...I hate those cardboard things because even after you have them inserted it feels wrong...the plastic is so much more comfortable
