Is anyone aware of of any research regarding the effects of general anesthesia on Alzheimer's patients?

My father declined very rapidly following an operation in which he received general anesthesia (rather than a local, or epidural).

Since then, I have been warned that general anesthesia is usually a very bad choice for Alzheimer's patients, but I have no other information.
