My Dad has been on Aricept for the last 2 years. My Mom has heard of Exelon and that it is better and is wondering if she should see about having Dad switched to Exelon, but she doesn't know a lot about it. Does anyone know if Exelon really is better than Aricept? And what the difference is between the two?

Thanks

Dear Sandy W or others with Exelon knowledge

I was curious to get your experiences with Exelon. My mother's memory has been getting progressively worse over the last 2 years due to Alzheimers, in spite of Exelon. We had already tried Aricept but found it had too many side effects.

My brother feels we might as well curtail Mom's usage, because she continues to decline. My feeling is its not doing her any harm and might be slowing the Alzheimer's progress. Do you have any thoughts on the subject or know of any studies.

Thanks for any input

It is my understanding that with Alzheimer's disease there is nothing that stops the decline. Aricept, Exelon and the others may for a time improve memory but when they stop workingthe decline is a bit more rapid so that out there in a few years the condition would be the same as if the medication had not been used. It is my feeling that each person will react differently to these drugs and there is no way of telling which is the better one for a particulare patient. My own feeling that making the patient feel loved and still important is better than relying on medicines.
