The other day after a haircut, my friend asked me if I had cut my hair by myself....I was like no why? He said that there was a small bald spot at the back of my head just above the bottom where my hair ends and my neck starts. It's about the size of a quarter. So I go to the doctor and she said that it was a fungal infection (which I know can cause alopecia) so I've been on a cream for about a week. My question is, has anyone ever had this, and please can someone tell me that the hair grows back :)

I have alopecia areata. Have had it since I was in 5th grade. I'm 22 now. At first they gave me the topical ointment, but now I recieve kenalog injections in the bald spots once a month and the hair does grow back.

Kenalog injections are corticosteroids that mimic hormones made by the adrenal glands. They are injected directly into the epidermis to trigger the the hair follicles to regrow. Not a cure just a solution.

I too have suffered from bald spots over the past 7 years. My dermatologist gives me the injections and it has always grown back. He says stress can cause it and I have noticed it does seem to happen whenever I'm under a lot of stress. Toelle

Hi! So glad that all of you have answered.
So does the hair grow back completely? Does the bald spot happen in the same place? Since I wrote the first comment in this thread, the bald spot has grown larger, but at the same time, I'm getting kenalog injections which have helped some regrowth, but only in patchy areas in the bald spot itself. As long as it stays localized, I don't care, though I do want it to grow back. The thing that bugs me, though, is that one of my friends who has "alopecia universalis"...i.e. has no hair on his entire body, saw my bald spot the other day and he said to me, "Oh, I noticed that at the back of your head. That's how mine started..." then I looked at him and after that was really nervous about what was going to happen to my hair.

I too have alopecia areata. The bald spot usually will grow back all the way, though it can take a long time. Whats frusterating is that you can have recurrences at any time in your life on any part of your hair. Alopecia universalis is very rare. I've done a lot of research on this. One alternative cure is aromatherapy. {removed} a study (44% of patients inproved with a certain aromatherapy recipe massaged into thier scalp). I have not tried this, but I think if you too do adequate research it could be helpful in not only solving the spot(s), but preventing them.
best of wishes ;)
