View Full Version : Health Care Decisions for my Grandfather

My grandfather has recently (March) been placed into an Alheimers Care Facility and he hates it! The other residents are all in worse shape than he is and he wants to go home. Unfortunately, I believe he is in the best place for him. I live 3,000 miles away and am going to visit again in late June to meet with his doctors etc. I have Power of Attorney for his financial and medical decisions and no one else in the family is really showing up to help - only to make trouble about my decisions and they want his money. I am very frustrated and could use some direction. He has a living trust and I have an elder care attorney drawing up an additional trust to protect his assets and get him prepared for Medicade Assistance. My problem is that I don't know how to best communicate with my grandfather what is best for him when he gets so upset and just wants me to "get him the hell out of there!" thank you for your support.

Hi Painted Skys, http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/wave.gif

Normally I don't post on this board but you are in a similar position we were in a few years back with grandpa brack... firstly welcome to healthboards http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif. We were faced with the same decisions we tried a home for him at first but like with your grandfather he did NOT like it so we made the decision of taking him out of the home .. the only difference is we were in the same town as him so bringing him home was not a problem. But I'll still ask is there anyway you can have him close to you? or even live with you? and possably get a caregiver to daily to help you? alot of times they just need to be close to family, beleive it or not even though they suffer something that affects the memory they still remember close family http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif grandpa brack lived in home up till he passed a few years ago we were just happy to see he was happy up till then. I know it's a big decision for you but you might think about it ...

Hugs
Koko

I am a RN that works in a Geriactric facility. I also took a special course to work with people that specializes in Alzhiemer's/Dementia type illnessesIt does take a time to adjust to a new facility. He, also, could be scared. If he is in the early stages of Alz's and he is in a facility looking at people that are in the final stages of Alz's he sees his future. The ideal situation is what the previous post suggested, however, that is not always possible. I believe that at some point they should be put into care as they need constant supervision. I know that it is difficult. If I can help you out with any questions please feel free to ask.
