Hi everyone,
My 4yo son is getting glasses. He has a lazy eye and is far sighted. Neither my husband or I have any eye problems so this is all new for us. The opthamologist told us he would have to wear the glasses until his eyes are corrected, however long it takes. I have a couple questions for some parents out there who maybe have had experience with this:
How long does it usually take? Weeks, months, years? I have no clue.
How do you get a 4yo to wear glasses all the time? Any tips?
Any responses would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

My nephew is 5 and has the same problems. He has been in glasses for almost 6 months. The problem seems gone until he takes them off. We have been told that it will take years to correct. I guess this would be different in each case.
We made a big deal of how cool he would look. We told him that Harry Potter wore glasses but he really wasnt too impressed. We finally got him cartoons of Alvin and the Chipmunks because Simon wears glasses. That was cool!!!LOL He has a Simon doll that I found on EBay.
He has earpieces the curve around his ears. That keeps them on in our case. When he does anything athletic, he has a band that goes on them to keep them on. He wears them unless he is sleeping then he gives them to us to put up. He has little control over his glasses right now except for keeping them on.
We went through the basic things with him about bringing them to us to clean them and not putting his fingers on the lense. The biggest problem we have had is other kids wanting to touch them. The teacher finally had a talk with the class about how everyone is different and his glasses were off limits. It really helped.
I really do recommend the rounded earpieces as they dont come off as easily. It has been a great experience for him overall. Good luck and I HTH

i had the exact same problem when I was young. I had an operation on my eye and now it isexactly strait. however i still have to wear my glasses over 10 years later though I was excited to wear glasses when I was young because I thought they were "cool" and now I have contacts. Just letting you know of a "success" story. Just wondering...is your son having an opperation?

Thanks for the tips Mommyof4, they did help. And nicole, thanks for your reply. There has not been any talk of an operation, so I guess we will just see how the glasses work out and hope for the best outcome.
Thanks again for your replies, and if anyone else out there has any comments or tips, I am all ears!

My son was 5 years old when he had to have glasses for lazy eye. I have it too but when I was younger mine was not caught in time to do anything about but as of yet I do not have to have glasses. My son is now 8 years old and he just went back to the eye doctor a few months ago and the only time he has to wear his glasses is at school compared to all the time when they found this problem 3 years earlier. The doctor said by this time next year he will not need glasses at all.

That's great news Nicole! Congratulations! How old are you by the way?
And Cindy thanks for your story, it's encouraging. It sounds like your son is doing great!

rrsmom, every case is different so the doctor can give you the best estimate. Even though the doctor can try to estimate based on his/her experience with similar cases, there is a wide variation of responses. Some kids with severe cases are not expected to ever get out of glasses. The best you can do is wear the glasses as directed to maximize your child's odds. Good luck, Terry
