Hi
I went for a routine check up today and they found that I had a little hole in my retina and they had to laser it back into place. I'm 22 and short sighted. I was wondering if anyone else had had this done??? Have you had any problems afterwards?
Thanks for your help

Hi bluebanana,
I'm 34 and severly near-sighted. I had 3 detached retinas within a years time. All in my right eye. The first time they tried cryotherapy along with a bubble. I had to lay on my left side for 2 weeks and use several eye drops. I was fine for about 5 months. Then I saw another dark spot in my vision. They found another hole. This time they did a vitrectomy. They removed the vitrious gel in my eye, lasered they hole and re-filled my eye with saline. During that time I was also pregnant with twins. Again I had to lay on my left side for 2 weeks and use eye drops. Unfortunately I developed a cataract due to the use of eye drops. Then a month after my twins were born I had a follow up visit and they found another hole. They did another vitrectomy, removed the cataract and inserted a lens. I had to lay face down for 2 weeks. Thank goodness my mom came to help us with the babies. I ended up developing a clouding of the capsule area from the lens. I had that removed. Unfortunately it left me with a LARGE floater that drives me nuts.
That has been almost 3 years ago. I've lost about 50% of my vision in my right eye. I have no peripheral vision. I has taken some getting used to. Driving worries me the most.
I hope that you don't have as many problems with your eyes as I have. Make sure that you get routine check ups. I could have probably saved my vision had I gone to an eye doctor that did regular check ups to check the condition of my retinas and lattice.
Good Luck!

Same thing just happened to me. However they didnt laser anything. I was told their is nothing they can do about the hole, and I just have to wait it out and watch for strange things to happen with my vision. I am also near sighted. My Dr. told me to get checked every year, but if my retna does detach their isnt anything they can do. Maybe I need a second opinion. I was told that this does happen in near sighted people. Not much consolation though.

My left retina actually detached when I was an infant....so they had to put a buckle on it to keep it in place......Needless to say since this was over 20 years ago I don't think lasers would have worked....well and it completely detached so...anyway!
I've got a lot more problems than just the retina detached but due to that I've got maybe 25-30 degrees of perifrial (sp) vision that is attributed to the detachment.....
And now I just keep waiting for the day when my eye doctor tells me they have to replace the buckle.....not looking forward to it but I know it'll happen...eventually.

mommy24 - I would definitely get a second opinion! There IS something they can do. In fact, the sooner the better. When I had holes in my retina they did surgery almost immediately.
Please get a second opinion!
