I want to start working out with 5-10 lb weights for weightl loss and toning. How do I do it? I've been just lifting them up and down. I have no clue what I'm doing.

I'm in the same boat, I have no idea what I should be doing
I have a huge barbel with a bunch of those plates that you can put on...right now just the bar itself is heavy enough for me
I'm wondering if this works for building muscles? Will I eventually be able to see them through the skin...you know, like the big buldging kind.

first off i'm not an expert at this stuff but if you want check out www.thepumpingstation.com or http://www.thepumpingstation.com/beginner.html they have some tips and routines and stuff. second off if you want muscle to be seen through your skin like those big bulky guys you need to lose fat and build up a little more muscle. also try not to use the same amount of weight 2 sessions in a row. i'm not saying for you to jump from like 10lbs to 40lbs but try at least to give your muscles a work out so try adding like 2 lbs at first to every session then when you know more and get stronger you'll be able to decide how much to add.

I'm sorry to say that the pumpingstation, like many body building sites is chiefly a means of selling supplements of questionable value. You might find out more worthwhile info at abcbodybuilding, or exrx--these sites have explicit insturcitonal material--or by reading through the related threads and posts on this site. Some members here, such as Naxis, are particularly knowledeable

The idea is to work each muscle group hard, but not overdo in any one day's session. This takes a bit of learning, and is worth the effort.

can you do the french press thing (triceps) without a barbell...I'd just like to use a couple of 5lb plates (I know, that's pretty sad...I can barely lift my barebell in that position)

also, could someone explain the pyramid principle thing on the pumping station (begginers)...I'm having trouble understanding what that one rep max thing is and the % of that?

The french press is best performed with an ez-curl bar and is too advanced for a beginner. Forget about the pyramid. You need to learn the basics before you journey into the more complex aspects of bodybuilding. Go to: bodybuilding.com.......this site offers some very good information and is very easy to navigate. I hope this helps a bit!
