View Full Version : Surgery is over!

Well, i will say this, the worrying was MUCH worst than anything else. The hospital i went to, everyone was friendly, except my recovery room nurse. she was nice, but you can see she was having a long day.

Everytime they stuck a needle in me, i questioned what it was. When they put my finger in this device, i asked what that was, i was constantly asking questions about everything. i felt bad for being such a questioning person, but i just wanted to know.

ok, good news...i did pass the stone, so basically, i sorta had the surgery, but not everything. they did the cystoscopy and x-rays and sure enough, the stone was gone. yeah for me! i had the feeling for the last week or so that i passed it. so, i have no stent, but it does really, really hurt to pee right now.

i'm not that sleepy, not as sleepy as i thought i would be afterwards. in fact, i'm hungry and planning to eat something light, probably a yoplait.

one thing, for a little while afterwards, when you burp, hiccup, anything, you will probably get the taste of oxygen, at least i did. i'm now finally starting to get rid of that.

i was knocked out, my doctor said he wanted me out, because otherwise, even if i was numbed, i'd be in pain and that wasn't worth it. it's true though, once i was out, i was out and when i woke up, i was happy to be awake.

so that's my experience. what has this all taught me? well, considering i'm almost 30, in 3 weeks!....it taught me, drink more water, watch what i eat, and just take better general care of myself!

thanks to everyone who listened to me and helped me over come this fear. i really, really appreciate everything!

Glad to hear everything went well, you are so right the worrying is much worse than anything else, you get freaked out and they know it, but it still goes well.

its odd that you had the surgery even after you passed the stone. I would have expected them to do x rays and ultrasounds before anything else. They did with me to make sure, what they were getting themselves into. it's a good thing they did because they found a second stone that was stuck in the bladder causing a blockage i didn't know about.

I'm so happy for you that everything went well, it's definetely something you learn from going through. I'm finally at the end stage of it with my stent being removed today and it was not as bad as i thought.

I'm still planning on taking it easy for the next few weeks to let myself completely heal. Like you it hurt to pee, but with my stent it hurt bad every single time. i'm so happy to be rid of it.

I wish you the best of luck and hope you don't get another stone. you have to drink that water and watch the Oxylate, Tea, Chocolate, things like that. If you can have it done, you should have them do a workup on you with a 24 hour urine sample and a bunch of other tests to see exactly what's causing the stones and see if thiers a way to correct it with fluid intake and dietary changes.

i was coughing up stuff from the gas and oxygen for a few days but it does go away, if it gets bad use an expectorant to help. You have my best wishes in the future. Let's hope none of us get more stones. I might be 30 but my stone experience makes me feel much older.

How long were you in the hospital?

I had asked to have x-rays done prior, but my doctor and his nurse didn't call the hospital about that, so they couldn't just do it and my doctor didn't do them, because he was going to do an x-ray during the procedure anyways. i wish they did it prior to the procedure, but it was funny, i told my urologist, i thought i passed it and he was sure i still had it in me....but when i woke up, i was sitting in the bed in recovery room and i was like, i dont' feel a string. then i thought, either i didn't have a stent or they put it in me without a string.

my boyfriend came to the waiting room and told me what the doctor told him, which was, the stone did pass, they did go way up inside me with the scope to make sure there wasn't more stones and because of this, no stent. my boyfriend said, it was about 45 minutes from the moment i left the pre-op to the moment the doctor contacted him.

so i'm guessing, maybe 30-45 minutes for the whole thing, but since i was asleep, i have no idea really how long i was in for. i got in around 2pm...check in was quick, was in pre-op i guess around 2:45 or 3pm...the waiting room was packed and while sitting there, 2-3 families were told about their family's kidney stone surgeries, so my boyfriend and i said, yesterday was kidney stone day.

pre-op was painful, only because, my veins are deep and so, the needles had to be poked around and finally they had to use my hand for the IV and other stuff. i don't think i had so many needles in me like i did yesterday. after they were done with my stats, they let my boyfriend come and i kept telling him i loved him.

i just kept thinking, when both my parents died, they died suddenly and their last moments of life, i never told them i loved them. mom was in a coma and i told her everyday, but, i don't know if she heard me or not and dad, he was awake the 2 weeks before his heart attack, so i told him everyday, but the morning he died, i was at home and couldn't say, i loved him. so, i had bad thoughts and just wanted to make sure my boyfriend knew i loved him and i made sure i told all my friends i loved them too. of course, all the freaking out was for nothing at all. i obviously came out of it fine.

we were able to leave for home...around 6 or so. we were home by 7, had to go for my antibotic, which took maybe 15 minutes or so. so, i guess for me, the entire procedure and medication shopping took roughly about 5 hours all together.

last night, when i first got home, i wasn't in pain at all. today, i am sore down there, so i took some tylenol. i'm still sore, but it's tolerable. my urologist told my boyfriend i'll probably be sore for a couple of days. i am peeing blood, which is gross, but considering i am a female, it's not that bad, i'm used to this. as far as actually going to the bathroom, that doesn't hurt as bad as it did yesterday, just now waiting for the soreness and the blood to go away.

honestly, honestly, honestly....worrying is so much worst. now i'm like, i can be put to sleep and never worry again, if i have to be. i put myself through weeks of being upset and having panic attacks over something that didn't affect me at all. so all i can say to anyone at all....don't worry. you'll make yourself sicker if you worry. it's not worth it to make yourself more sick over something that you can't control anyways. so, i'm happy its over with and now i'm ready to recover!

you really lucked out not having a stent. I fear the week of discomfort from the stent as much as I fear the procedure itself. Tomorrow at 8AM is my date with destiny.

How about after effects of the antistetic, any nausea?

I felt a little sick to my stomach for about an hour afterwards. But that was it. Once i started getting fluids in me, i started to feel better. When I got home, i had a can of pineapple, which took me about an hour to eat, cause i was still being slow.

I wasn't that tired afterwards either, which surprised me. i thought i would come home, maybe have something small to eat and then fall asleep, but i was actually up till after midnight, but i fell asleep right away. so, you might be tired or you might not...i guess it depends on what they use and how much.

i had no side effects other than feeling sick for about an hour. once i woke up, took me about 30 minutes to come back to normal, meaning, i could dress myself and talk normally.

you will possibly have the taste of oxygen in your mouth though...i coughed a couple of times and burped, i know, real lady like!, and sure enough, oxygen in my throat and when i drank the 2 cups of water they gave me, it tasted like oxygen. but that was overcome really fast. once i got home and had my own water, i was feeling normal again and now, have no taste of oxygen in my mouth at all.

all i feel is soreness down in my pelvic area, which the doctor told my boyfriend would be a few days to get over that. i did urinate blood and that is finally starting to go away...so you will probably have that too. i started drinking lots of water again, so it's starting to come out of me without as much blood, so i hope by tonight to be blood free.

i'm not sure how long i'll be sore for, other than a few days. you can tell i've been poked and probed, so i know the pain is from that and not something else. i'll be glad when that goes away, cause then i'll be normal again!

How about the Iv in the hand did that hurt much?

My viens are deep also, so I expect the hand to be used.

The IV...i will not lie, that almost made me cry. I dont' think i ever said "ouch" so many times as i did last night. they first will put a shot in you to numb your arm i guess, but it didn't seem to numb me a whole lot, so maybe it was for something else. then, they kept poking and poking and now i have at least 3 needle marks in my hand. in fact, the nurse who was working on me, had to get another nurse to try to find my veins. she found one in my arm, but said she didn't want that one...but i don't know why.

so i truly will not lie, the needles hurt like mad, but once they were in, they were in and didn't bother me. only time they bothered me...they were in my left hand and my boyfriend sat on the left of me, so when i went to touch him, my hand came up with all the needles in me.

so, i will prepare you, this will hurt, but believe me, after a second or 2 of pain, once it's in, you won't feel anything after that.

You said needles? Was there more than one needle in your hand? Why would they need more than one?

wideawakeinaz

one needle i know was to numb up my arm....one needle was for the IV....the other needle, i don't know. i know i had about 3 things. when they did the anxiety medication to lower my blood pressure, that just simply went into the IV itself, so that didn't bother me. the nurses kept saying, this could sting, this could pinch....and they did....

but honestly, after they are in you or removed, you will feel fine after 2 seconds. the IV will be the only annoying one, just because it's hanging on to your hand....and if you move your hand, the IV goes with you....

but you will be fine with needles. trust me...i hate needles, and they did hurt, but it was over so fast.

One more question, How soon did they remove the IV after surgery?

wideawakeinaz
01-08-2004, 05:04 PM
The IV was removed from me...once i was stable and i was going to start getting dressed to go home...they removed my IV. so, i was awake for about a half hour before going home, so maybe 45 minutes to an hour after the surgery, they'll remove it. once your stats are good, then you'll get it out of you.

i'm still hurting though, hurts to urinate and hurts to walk and hurts in my back....but at least my urine is not longer bloody, so i'm making progress!

One more question, How soon did they remove the IV after surgery?

For me it was basically whenever i wanted, once i urinated i was free to go home.

When i first went in they drew blood and did a urine test, so there's one needle.
and the only other one was the one in my hand that the antibiotics and electrolytes were going through.

The nurse had this wierd look on her face, how did you get your clothes on with the iv bag on ? LOL i pulled the IV bag under my shirt and out the sleeve lol.

the sooner you pee after the surgery the sooner you can go home.

Did they collect the urine sample after surgery? Did you have to pee while the iv was in place?

wideawakeinaz

they didn't have me pee before going home....they just made sure my stats were acceptable, took my blood pressure about once every 5 minutes it seemed. the machine automatically went on and off. once i was conscious enough to do things and my stats were good, i was free to go.
