Hey guys...please help! i know NOTHING about a kidney stone but my sisters doctor told her about 6mo ago she had kidney stones--she said she was supposed to go back to dr but i know she didn't and now she having terrible back pains and i saw blood in her urine several times over the last couple weeks. She is only 16 and her friend told her not to go to the dr that it will pass on its own and that the drs will only make it ten times worse with VERY painful surgery and that she will not be able to go back to school for awhile which means she can't finish her cheerleading season. poor child--i don't know what to do as my mother is never home to talk any sense into her and i can see she is in a lot of pain and very scared. She is in gymnastics and still going to her practices and i can see she is in so much pain. She is very scared of surgery (previous bad experience) but i can't stand to see her in so much pain. anyway, if someone could please tell me what she needs to do. Can these things reaally pass on their own like she says? And if she goes to the dr how much school and cheer practice do you think she will miss? Is the pain really that bad and for how long? If someone could please help i would so much appreciate it. i am very scared and don;t know what to do. I know the cheerleading thing sounds ridiculous but it is obviously very important to her for some reason. Sorry to ramble, i am just scared and she seems to be getting worse and worse. Thank you..................................... .............Rhiannon

Hi Rhiannon. The answer to the question is, yes, stones can pass on their own; however, I disagree that she shouldn't see the doctor, and I"ll tell you why. Not all stones are the same, and not all stones are physically able to pass. As you can imagine, stones that are very large won't be able to pass, and there are also things called "staghorn" stones which are shaped in such a way that they can't pass either. The fact that you have seen blood in the urine makes me realize that you're actually seeing frank blood which is also not a good thing. The other risk is, if you have a stone in your urinary system, there is always the risk for an obstruction...this can lead to back up of urine in the kidney, hydronephrosis, and can lead to renal failure.
Don't take this lightly....at LEAST take your sister to get some imaging done.
