rainbowdawn 01-08-2004, 11:37 AM Could someone please tell me what an astigmatism(not sure if I spelled it right) of the eye means? Thanks!! ;) Sponsor Aurora 01-08-2004, 03:09 PM Hiya. Astigmatism is one of a group of conditions known as refractive errors. These errors disturb how the light is focussed within the eye. It is not a disease. It usually occurs when the front surface of the eye, the cornea, has an irregular curvature. In a 'normal' eye the cornea is smooth and equally curved in all directions. In an astigmatic eye the front surface of the cornea is curved more in one direction than in the other. This abnormality can result in a distortion in vision as the eye cannot focus the light rays to a point. Astigmatism is very common. Some of the symptoms experienced are distortion or blurring of images, headaches, squinting and eye discomfort. However, these are also symptoms of many other conditions. If the degree of astigmatism is significant enough to cause these problems, wearing corrective lenses is advisable. Hope that helps. Aurora :bouncing: |
