View Full Version : Going to see cardiologist, suggestions?

Hi,

Am going to see cardiologist finally after years of minor problems. I am sure I have neurally mediated hypotension (too low blood pressure when standing or something, more to it than that but I forget). My symptoms are: frequent episodes of tachycardia, shortness of breath that comes and goes (like last night, going up steps - was out of breath and heart was pounding/racing), palpitations very often (on med for that, Inderal) and occasional pain right over the heart. Oh also, I sweat too much. When it's hot weather, people sweat, but I seem to REALLY sweat (in hot weather or during exercise). Am a little overweight but not that bad.

Ive already had EKG, Holter and Echo so Im thinking anything serious would have shown up already (Echo just showed trace mitral regurg). I also have severe/advanced Lyme Disease. Am 30, female.

Any tests I should ask to have done? Symptoms havent progressed or anything and Im still alive. So my guess is nothing's wrong. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Is your thyroid problem being treated properly? Thyroid problems can cause all sorts of problems with the heart if you are over or under medicated and a lot of your symptoms sound very thyroid related.

Actually, no, thyroid isnt even being addressed at this time! Standard blood tests show it to be 'normal' although I am certain it is NOT normal. Im hungry all the time, can't take the cold, tired and a million other symptoms. Most of these for many years and is hard to know what ones are from having had Lyme Disease so long w/o knowing it (21 years about). The being hungry all the time thing (stomach is grumbling right now and I JUST ate) is relatively new. Im trying to find a good endocrinologist who takes my insurance so I can get to the bottom of all these problems.

So once the thyroid probs are corrected, heart probs will cease, yes?

Thanks for your reply btw!

Thyroid can affect all parts of your body and yes if the heart problems are being caused by the undertreated thyroid then if you get that in control the heart problems should subside.

I have been having palps for about 3 months, I have also had a lot of problems with my thyroid lately and have had too much T3 in my system, as I'm getting that more in line the palps are getting less. I even went to a cardiologist and had some testing done, he says I have extra beats and suspects they are caused by my thyroid being out of whack.

What type of thyroid problem do you have and are you taking meds? You said your results are normal, but a lot of times a lot depends on where within the range your numbers are. Also you should be having your T4 Free and T3 free tested, these are the active thyroid hormones your body is actually "running" on and there again a lot can depend on where in the range those numbers fall as to how you will feel.

The hungry all the time or hungry even after you eat is something I know quite well, I've had that as well, it can be caused by your thyroid or by blood sugar imbalance.

Find that endo, you need some good tests and hopefully you will find a good endo.

By the way, you also list chronic fatigue, anxiety, palpitations, insomnia, fibromyalgia, all of these can also be symptoms of an undertreated thyroid, many people are treated for anxiety and depression and also fibromyalgia only to find out later that they actually have a thyroid problem, so get that checked out.

Take care, and keep me posted on how you are. :) Your too young to be having so many problems.

Hi and thanks for the reponse!

Sorry I couldnt write sooner, I got banned :(

I still cant find an endo who takes my insurance. THe cardio appointment is this Tuesday i think. I made the appointment for the sole purporse of being tested for neurally-induced hypotension (am positive i have it, just need it confirmed). I will ask the cardio if he knows any good endos who take my insurance.

Yeah, I do have a lot of health problems for someone my age. I really believe its because Ive had Lyme, undiagnosed for more than 20 years! It really, really threw my body out of whack.
I dont take any thyroid meds since no doctor believes me when I say theres a problem despite a lot of symptoms that say otherwise. I real endo would listen to me though (i would hope).

Thanks a lot for your help, I really appreciate it!!!

Farm Girl,

You say you had an Echo...I'm assuming that was a resting echo.
You will need a stress echo with or without some kind of marker (thallium or technicium is best.) What the cardiologist must determine is whether your occasional pain and frequent shortness of breath is cause by cardiac ischemia...lack of oxygen to a portion of the heart.
A resting echo or a holter without heavy stress can, and very often does, miss the ischemia!

I found that my insurance company has a really NICE web presence and I can always find specialists "in plan" very easily without stirring from the desk...try yours!

Well hello  and welcome back.

Let me know what you find out from the cardio and yes an endo (if he/she is good) should listen and do proper testing.

You can order your own bloodwork by going online to HealthCheck USA, a lot ot thyroid posters in the thyroid forum use them, so they are reliable. You can go and see if they have a lab in your area, you order the bloodwork from them, pay for it, they send you paperwork and then you go to the lab and get the bloodwork done and you can get your results online. Might be an option for thyroid testing if you can't get a dr to do it.

Keep me posted on how you are :)
