I recently went to the doctor and my hemoglobin count was at an 11.6 or 11.8. I am a 27 year old female. Is this considered anemic? All I know is that I get very lightheaded frequently and am suffering from headaches more than usual. Also my heartbeat is very rapid and I'M EXHAUSTED ALL THE TIME, etc.
Help!

The normal range is
Adult women: 12-16 gm/dl

What did the doctor think who treated you? Did he say you were anemic?

The numbers you mention are so incredibly close to normal, those are not really looked at for anemia UNLESS other blood tests in the panel were off. I think it is the MCV that is indicative of iron deficiency. If that number is say around 70, and your H&H is a little off, they would investigate for Iron Deficiency Anemia...doing that, they would look at your Ferritin level to see if you have Iron Deficiency.

But, with a number of 11.6 or 11.8, I doubt your MD would treat you for anemia. My Hemo usually doesn't treat until it drops in to the 10's.
