My 4 year old has shin pain so bad he wakes up several times at night crying. At first I thought "growing Pains" it will go away, but it has not. I heard lack of vitamins like magnesium may be the cause. Does anyone else know anything about this in such a young child? It's not shin splints I would not think, he doesn't do exercise. I need any advise or help I can get. Next step is going to the Doctor. thank you

Fallen arches can cause shin splints. Try supporting his arches with supportive shoes &/or inserts and see if that helps. A whole broad range of things can cause shin splints, anything from malnutrition to injury to overuse.

1. Does he get in the booster car seat by himself? if they get in improperly repeatedly it hurts the shin area. Does he climb stairs. Does he go up the slide from the slide part and try to climb the slide part?

2. Have his doctor test for lukemia just to rule it out, my daughters doctor did. she also had a history of profuse night sweats from the head to the middle of the spine on occasion and complained my legs hurt.

I hope it turns out to be just soccer/kick ball pressure pains.

When my 19 year old son was around that age, he also had a lot of shin pain that would wake him up crying. The doctor did a bunch of tests and told us it was growing pains. So we continued to rub his legs until he felt better and went back to sleep. Massageing his legs made him feel a lot better. I don't remember how long this went on, but it was a good while it seemed until he out grew it.
