I HAVE HAD PROBLEMS OVER THE LAST 6 SIX YR.'S WITH ANEMIA. MY HEMOGLOBIN STAYS AROUND 8 OR 9. LATELY I HAVE BEEN AWAKENED AT NIGHT BY WHAT FEELS AS IF I HAVE STOPPED BREATHING AND I AM GASPING FOR BREATH.
HAS ANYONE EVER EXPERIENCED THIS, AND CAN THIS BE A SOMETHING CAUSED BY ANEMIA?
THANKS

Sounds more like sleep apnea, have you ever been checked for that?

NANCY, THANKS FOR REPLYING. THAT SOUNDS LIKE SOMETHING I SHOULD CHECK OUT. I ALWAYS ASSUMED IT WAS CAUSED BY ANEMIA I DIDN'T REALLY CONSIDER OTHER CAUSES. THANKS AGAIN!

As a child i was anemic and then it stopped once i hit teen years. But just this year found out it's back. But before my doc caught in on a blood test or tests, i had a BAD time breathing! Throughout the day and at night especially. I think if you have anemia and trouble breathing that you should talk to the doc about it and get prescribed some meds for it. The doc immediately put me on a huge iron/mineral supplement and when I take that the breathing is just fine..
Take care.

I have an inherited anemia, Thalassemia Minor Beta for there is nothing for it. My hem. stays about 10 to 10.5. All of my life I have blamed all of my excessive tiredness and sleepiness on the anemia. It was only when i went to a Neuro. for Neuropathy that I also found out I had Narcolepsy and Sleep Apnea. I use a CPAP and that has helped so much. Look up Narcolepsy if you experience very vivid dreams of all kinds. I stop breathing in the dream state and then my oxgyen level drops. Hope this helps. Sleep Apnea needs to be ruled out, but anemia at your degree can definitely cause problems breathing. Please, let your MD know what is going on.
