I just had a blood test & it said I don't have enough "blood platelets" (for blood clotting)! :( Does anyone else have this? How can I raise the number of blood platelets? Does this have to do with me just getting off of birth control pills? I'm really mad about this because I need to have surgery on Monday & this might prevent me from having it. :(!!

Lori,
What is your platelet count? "Normal" is 150-450k or
so. There are many things that can affect platelet
counts and its very possible your test is an
outlier (i.e. the next time you have it checked it
will be just fine) or if the count is slightly low
this might be your normal baseline.
My wife had/has "Evan's Syndrome", and acquired
autoimmune disorder where the autoimmunity is towards
both red blood cells and platelets, i.e. she manages
to make antibodies to nuke both her platelets and
her red blood cells. When just platelets are affected
this is called ITP, idiopathic thromocytopenic purpura
(minus a possible mispelling or two). However there
is a clear test for this and your doc should be
able to tell you 100% for sure if this is what you
have. It is treatable, my wife is fine today.
