I had this bump in my chest that has now surfaced and grown into a rather large, very painful red pimple. When it started, there was a visible hole or pore at the top of the bump. It is in a cluster of hair. My question is, now it is very painful and it is so thick, I can feel much more of it underneath the skin. Is this something I should attempt to pop on my own or should I see a doctor? Is there any way I can get the swelling down first? What can I do to prevent infection or further infection? Thanks for your help!

First of all, don't squeeze it. Go to a dermatologist and get it fixed before you have any scarring. They can usually help you in 1-2 visits. I have tried fixing my own pimples and I also had cystic acne before and after much scarring to my surprise my dermatologist cleared me up in no time. Its not worth playing around with it yourself. The doctor is worth every penny, its your body you are talking about. I've been where you are and I am now 49 years old and its taken me a long time to finally come to realize how fast things can be cured if you don't wait. Let the professionals help, thats their specialty.

Thank you debz...my Dad actually thinks it's a boil. It's going down in size and pain. If it still persists, I will see a doctor, though, thank you! :)

Hi,just now saw this post or I would have replied sooner. I have had the EXACT same thing many times. I also work for a dermatologist and can tell you this is common,it is "folliculitis",or in other words--inflamed hair follicle.I am on my 6 month of antibiotics for this. Good luck

I keep trying to post and it's not working.
However, if you can't get to a doctor, I would recommend hot/wet compresses.
