Hi, I'm new here at this board and I was wondering if anyone else has hemolytic anemia and how you deal with it. I'm in college and I had it cleared up but now it's back and I feel like my whole world is crashing in. Is there hope for people with this or is it going to be a life where I'm always sick? I have had so much happen lately (my mom died) and I really don't think I can handle this anymore. PLease, any help would be great. Andy

I realize the date of your posting is a while ago, but I just went thru a similar experience regarding hemylitic anemia and my dog! She was also very ill and had to go on steroids. Now she is down to 10 mg prednisone every other day... BUT a "special" doctor has recommended that she take Grapeseed Extract and Cod liver oil daily to build her back up. He is a human doctor, and the dosage is 50mg grapeseed 3xday and 1000mg fish oil 2xday. He wants to see my dog off the steroids completely and is confident she won't need to go back on them! I looked into the supplements, and they are certainly safe and worth a try. I hope you read this and find it helpful! Your condition is urgent but hopeful! Go to the healthfood store now! Sorry about mom... I'm sure she is aware of your pain(s).

Hi..Hemolytic anemia is the destruction of your red blood cells.....I have it also....however its not something you have one week and not the next....there has to be a reason this is happening....you need to find out why ...and keep on the treatment....or yes you will feel sick all the time..
sorry about your mum.... http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/frown.gif

Some medications can also cause this; i recently had blood work done as part of routine physical exam. My blood work came back and I reviewed it myself and noticed everything was normal except total bilirubin was slightly elevated. My doctor did not discuss this with me but through my own investigation I have determined that this indicates the destructin of red blood cells which is what hemolytic anemia is. I take an antihistamine for 17 years (Optimine) for terrible allergies and I looked up in the PDR about side effects and lo and behold there it is: hemolytic anemia. So now I have to find another medication to take. I feel fortunate to have discovered this before I have full blown symptoms and abnormal labs which would include low hemoglobin and probably low red cell count.. so be aware that medications can also cause this problem.
