Hi,
my boyfriend just had his wisdom teeth out a week ago, and he has this big lump on the side of his jaw, and is experiencing extreme jaw tenderness, and stiffness. Before the surgery he had always had cracking/ popping that occured, but it didn't seem to bother him too much. He also has frequent neck, and back aches.

I know I should have enough experience with tmj myself, but I am just not sure what advice to give him... Does anybody know if this sounds like the beginniong of tmj, or have any suggestions on how I can help him?

cally22 - he could just be having post-surgical problems/pain. i'd first talk to the surgeon who did the extraction to see what s/he says, and see if he can get some meds. if your bf doesnt get better in a couple of weeks, tho, i'd consider seeing a TMJD specialist to see what his discs are up to and all of that fun stuff.

That sounds logical, I guess i might be over jumping the guns, but I just love him, and worry about him. And when he tells me about these things it makes me worry.
