Hi everyone,
Please let me know what you think? I had TMJ 14-15 years ago and the dentist made a mouth guard, which I didn't wear too much. I haven't had a problem all these years. Then last year I had several huge fillings replaced, and I think I may have gotten it again, or maybe it's something else. I don't recall any pain like this before. It is awfull. It's in both joints, and when I put pressure on them it feels better. My ears hurt and I have pain under my jaw. Also, I just broke out with 4-6 canker sores all over in my mouth.

In the morning I'm fine, but as the day progresses, the pain gets worse. It' almost unbearable, and certainly extremelly uncomfortable. Heat helps, and maybe aspirin (I can't really tell, because I've only taken it once out of desperation).

I am allergic to advil type drugs, and cannot tolerate pain pills at all. They give me headaches, and I throw up, which causes me to get dehydrated. Then I have to take antinausa meds to keep water down. Given the above description of symptoms, what do you think? Does it sound llike TMJ to you, and if so, where does one start? Who should I call first, my Dr. or Dentist? There seems to be conflicting information, and it's all new to me. Sorry to go on, and on. Thanks in advance for any replies. I've read some of the posts, and I get confused...

Your symptoms certainly sound like you have TMJ and that all the work in your mouth to replace those fillings has caused the TMJ to flare back up. I would suggest you consult someone who specializes in TMJ and have them check you out. The sooner you begin treating TMJ, the better the success rate.

I never had any problems until I had two fillings replaced two years ago. I had novacaine on one side and when the novacaine wore off, my bite was completely off. None of my teeth fit together properly and two of the front ones banged into each other. TMJ symptoms have been known to start from having dental work like fillings or caps done, or having a wisdom tooth pulled.

You'll want to find a dentist who is extremely knowledgeable in TMJ - these are hard to find so you may have to look around. There is no TMJ specialty, so anyone can claim to be a specialist.

Good luck and take care.
