View Full Version : My Gram...

I just found out a few hours ago that my gram has cancer in her uteris. She is 84 years old. I dunno how this happened to her or why... but I just was wondering if anyone here has this type of cancer & what you had to go thru to make it go away or whatever you call it.

I am so upset right now b/c my BF's gram recently recovered from chemo & radiation b/c she had cancer in her neck or something. This time around is going to be really hard on me, esp b/c this is my gram now. I am so mad that she has to go thru this now, after living such a long healthy life... I am so sad b/c I don't wanna have to go thru this again (I know that sounds selfish - but I really don't mean it in that way, it just sux, you know?) & I am really worried about her.

If anyone can help with some info that'd be great...

BTW - if there is a cancer forum on here for that type, just let me know... I wasn't sure if this was the same as ovarian cancer or not? TY

No...uterine cancer is nothing like ovarian cancer, and the thing about it is, it carries a much better prognosis. The thing with uterine cancer is that, as long as it hasn't spread, it's very easy to just do a hysterectomy and remove the cancer altogether. A hysterectomy is a pretty major surgery, BUT, it is routinely done and people recover from it very quickly

I know it is hard, just be thankful it is not spread to the pancreas or liver. My mother is about to start chemo to reduce the size of the tumors on her liver. Thankfully for us it is localized in her liver. The gallbladder was the source and that is gone now. Chemo/radiation to shrink them then surgery or cryofreeze and other options after chemo/radiation. Be thankful if it is just in that one spot. I know it is scary(God I know) but if it is just localized be grateful,

Hi, just to let you know that my Mom ended up with uterine cancer when she was 76 yrs old. In her case they think it was because of the HRT (hormone replacement therapy) that they put alot of women her age on back when they first had menopausal symptoms.
She had some spotting and went in for a ckup right away. They did a D&C and then a complete hysterectomy and from what I was told it takes alot for cancer to break through the lining of the uterus into the rest of the body. What strength that keeps a baby in for 9 months also seems to keep the cancer from spreading out very easily either.
She has had tests now for two years and everything looks great.
Hopefully the same will happen for your Grandma -
Please be sure to come back and let us know who things go.

My great aunt had uterine cancer when she was in her early 70's. She had a hysterectomy, and then went on to live until 87.

Hopefully your Gram will have equally good luck. If she's in otherwise pretty good health, there's no reason that she can't have a hysterectomy and recover fully.

Thank you everyone for the replys. I am sorry that you also have had to go thru this with family members. It's so hard - but the worst is that I know it's got to be 1,000 times harder on her since she is the one who has to deal with it. Sometimes life is just so unfair & unexplainable! She's such a wonderful women - why did something like this have to happen to her now or even at all?? KWIM?

I hope that she pulls thru this, mentally & physically. I will keep you updated as I find things out!

Update: My gram wrote me & to let me know that she had discussed options with the Dr & they decided to schedule her surgery for a historectomy (sp?). The surgery will be done Feb 28th & I believe she said that she most likely won't need to radiation after that... but I can't remember - sorry. Maybe someone else knows if they do that after this type of surgery or not?

Well, just wanted to let you all know, so hopefully they will get it all with the surgery & she will recover easily.

From the sounds of it there seems to be really good news for your Grandma. While they have probably done a biopsy and don't feel that there is much chance that the cancer has spread thru the uterine wall (making radiation probably unecessary) they will want to wait until after the actual hysterecomy when they can examine her uterus better before deciding whether to do radiation or not.

My mom didn't need radiation either, but did have to go in for frequent Pap tests (even without the uterus there is still a small risk that the vaginal area could be affected) for two years.

I'm glad to hear that things are looking up! Please keep in touch - especially before and after her surgery. It's a scary time! I've sat in that surgical waiting room myself waiting for Good News!!

Thanks, yes I believe that's what she said. They won't know till after they do the surgery. But since the uterine wall is so strong b/c it is able to hold the baby & fluids for 9 months that it's very likely the cancer hasn't spread. Esp since they were lucky to have caught it early on. Now we just have to wait till the 28th to come!

Hi, I just wanted to check in and let you know that you and your Grandma and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.
Hang in there, it's the waiting and the not knowing that is hardest of all!!
Been there myself,
Ruth

Glad to hear that the news is good right out of surgery!
My next prayers will be for:
1) A quiet nurse's station
2) A quiet roommate
3) No problems with pain meds

I am so sorry that you are having to go through this with someone you love. My grandmother passed away a few years ago from breast cancer. I had a really hard time dealing with the whole ordeal because she was truelly my very best friend. She raised me. I felt like my whole world had fallen through when she passed away. Cancer can be beaten. I had an english teacher in Jr. high that had beaten it. Cancer is a really hard thing to go through for the person who has it and the people who love them. Let her know that you love her. Spend as much time as you can with her.

Hello, My aunt was just diagnosed with Uterine Cancer and she had surgery this past Monday. I found out today that it has spread to the muscles around and to her liver. Does anyone have any experiences with Uterine Cancer beyond surgery?

I am so sorry to hear that you are also going thru this with a loved person :( . I feel so bad b/c I know how you feel. My gram's didn't spread so I don't know what to tell you! I will be thinking of you, your aunt & family!! {{{HUGS}}}

I was just checking in to let you all know that my gram is doing well & recovering. Thank you all for the help & words of encouragement. I was so scared for her & it was really hard after what we went thru with BF's gram. I am glad that she is doing good - again Jandm, I am terribly sorry & hope there is something they can do for your aunt to get her thru this & be able to continue to live a happy, healthy life :) .

What is the spicific name of the cancer. They have names, not call cancers in the same spot are the same, its just easyier to say uterine in stead of lyominsarcoma( that took my nanas life) or what ever other medical name the doctor has. just curious
