That's what the U.S. government is claiming.

They just bashed the Global Strategy on Diet, Physical Activity and Health released by the World Health Organization. In a letter to W.H.O., the U.S. states that it doesn't like the report's assertions that people should cut down on "eg energy-dense foods, high/added sugar foods and drinks, meats, certain types of fats and oils and higher fat dairy products" on the grounds that there isn't enough scientific evidence that such foods are linked to obesity and diabetes. They also didn't like some other things in the report, such as the suggestion that there was a link between obesity in children and the marketing of foods high in sugar and fat to children.

This is nothing new. Last spring the U.S. sugar industry threatened to make the U.S. government cut off funding to W.H.O. They probably had something to do with this too. However, it was apparently the Grocery Manufacturers of America were the ones that asked the goverment to do this. (Grocery Manufacturers of America is an organization that represents companies like Pepsi and Hershey's.)

not entirely surprising, but sickening nonetheless.
