Hello

I am scheduled for a two level ACDF surgery on 1/22, and feeling very nervous about it. Will this be the end of a normal life !! I know with the sever pain my life is not normal, but the thought of using doner bone and plates and screws, always bring butterflies in my stomach.

For patients who had the surgery, were they able to return back to a normal life, or at least happier life and free of pain.

Any thoughts will be appreciated
Alex

Alex:

My sister had this surgery a year ago, and leads a perfectly normal life. She works every day, and takes care of her husband, house, and children. She is pain-free.

I had the surgery this past December, and I, too, am leading a normal life. I am pain-free (although I do get sore if I do too much in one day -- probably because it's so soon after surgery). I am grateful the problem was found and corrected as soon as it was . . . so I didn't have to wait and suffer for too long.

Good luck! You'll be fine.

Alex,
Yes there is hope for a normal life after surgery with fusion-- I had my cervical fusion in 1994. I have taken care of my parents, worked two jobs & until last month everything was ok. Now I am facing more surgery-- because a thoughtless young girl was late for work one monday morning & failed to see my car had stopped at a traffic signal. She rear ended my car & sent me back to the painful world of disk pain. Anyway, I will pray your surgery goes well, just don't try to over do-- it will take time to get better.

Hey Alex, I will echo Sadieho by saying don't over do it after surgery. Everybody does, with the elation of being rid of the pain, we all just jump back into life full force. NOT! Heal, Recover, Rest, Enjoy being pain free and heal. Maintain your posture, follow doctors orders and above all else, TAKE IT EASY. Its better to recover slowly than return to pain quickly. Oh, and the surgery is nothing. Think of it as going to a hotel with bizarre room service. Relax and enjoy. Good luck and let us know how it turns out. I'm off to my first day at pain management and may the gods(Force) be with us.

My first surgery was in 97 - I went on to carry and give birth to an 11 pound baby in 98. lol

My second surgery was in November, and every day is wonderful. I have no complaints.

Heed the advice of others ... don't overdo it after surgery. Allow yourself to be pampered to the nth degree. Seriously!

Let us know how you do!

Donna

P.S. Sadie - getting into a car accident is my biggest fear after this surgery. God bless you!

Hi,
Ditto, Ditto, Ditto The Need To Not Jump Right Back In There After Surgery.
I Had Acdf With Own Bone And Fusion. After Month Felt Pretty Good. Yesterday I Did Groceries Fully Lifting By Myself For First Time And Suffered Facial Nerve Tremor Really Badly For First Time.

When Do People Like Us Get It That We Are Mechanical Beings And Overdoing It Is Definitely Exhibited By The Way Are Body Responds To That.

Sooo,.. You Will Be Okay, But As Donnkay And Jodawa Said, Take It Slowly And Don't Jump In Too Fast Or You Will Pay A Couple Of Warning Signals To Your Body If You Don't Listen To Others Who Have Dealt With Your Plight As Well.

Sincerely,
Nearly New Again....again... Nero

Just had my 3rd surgery in 9 years. Each one was successful at the time until the dreaded domino affect kicked in. Don't try and rush your recovery. Learn from experience on this board.
