After I scrub my hair in the shower I have about 20+ hairs in my hands and I was just wondering what a normal amount of hair loss during washing your hair was...
No signs of hair loss in my family, both parents and grandparents, and I am currently 21.

You're not alone on this one. I've always loss hair in the shower, but lately I've been having 20 or more strands when I run my hands thru my hair. My doctor thinks mine is just stress related (husband w/cancer). Maybe you've got something going on in your life thats stressing you right now.

could it be that you are not getting enough protein?
dustin1234
01-21-2004, 02:33 PM
It might be stress related... but my "stress causers" seem much less than a majority of people... so I doubt thats it. Sorry to hear about your husbands cancer. My mom's sister just got cancer a little bit ago and it is certainly a struggle.
And about the protein...I'm not sure if I have gotten enough... but is protein the only thing that supports hair strength or is there anything else I should be sure to take? Like vitamin E maybe?
Thanks guys for the feed back... one more thing... even if this is stress related... that means it will eventually stop falling out right:)

Sorry to hear about your stressful periods - but yes, your hair will grow back when the stress leaves your life. I went through two stressful periods previously, and I'm currently going through another now. CHUNKS of my hair are falling out in the shower, somewhere in the range of 50 hairs. But I'm somewhat confident that once the anxiety is gone, the hair will return to its normal growth cycle (just as it has done in the past).
You'll notice that the hair loss will hault almost immediately after the negativity is removed, and it'll take about 6 months to get back to your original state.
Coincidentally, seeing all that hair being lost can certainly add to the stress - so focus on getting better, and your hair will too. :)

Hair falling out can also be a sign of low iron and thyroid problems.
I know; this was the case with me. Doctor ran blood tests and I am now taking iron supplements daily.
Good luck!

Hi,
I'm 24 and I've been having a lot of hair loss, too. This started last June. I do have thyroid problems, but I have been on meds for 5 months now. It is sooo depressing! I used to have fairly thick hair, but now you can actually see my scalp showing through on the top of my head. Everyday when I take a shower my hair falls out in clumps.
I want to atleast try some kind of hair loss product. Has anyone heard of something that works?

When my husband ( age 22 ) had mono, hepatitis, and jaundice his hair was all over the pillow every day. They gave him B-12 shots, but he had significant hair loss. It never grew back, it stayed thin and you could see his scalp. I started him on Nioxin products for his scalp and hair about 5 years ago and he has never lost any more hair since then. He has baby fine hair, but I don't think he'll ever get bald. He's now 52. His hair is easy to manage andis in excellent condition.
Nioxin products ( you'll need shampoo, treatment and conditioner ) are only available to professional cosmetologists in PA, but better salons will carry it. Several of his friends are using it too with good results. I use it as well ( for color treated hair ) and have fuller, thicker hair and my natural wave has returned. The conditioner is excellent for your skin and takes the BURN out of sunburn and heals the skin.
Call around.

hey dustin,
im 22 as well and though im not experiencing the same type of hair loss, i am beginning to notice about 5-6 hairs in my hands after i rub my hair in the shower. i never noticed it before. but i think the other replies are right, stress has alot to do with it. i too, have very thick and curly hair. i think these Nioxin products that the previous member has mentioned are definitely worth trying. are these products very expensive? also i heard taking biotin in higher doses is very helpful in thickening hair.

Vitamins.
Have your Iron level checked. Also take Vitamin B supplements. You can get Hair nutrients supplement at most health stores, that contains vitamins necessary for hair.

I believe mine is due to stress but also, mine has gotten much more oily and acne to go with it. I believe it is due to stress and hormones so the doc put me on Spiro. I have gotten good results with the oil but I am still shedding. I have gone through this before when I was involved in a horrible relationship and aafter that, it went away. I am hoping it will go away this time. But, it is unnerving and stressful just seeing the hair in the shower. Hope it all works out for all of us. Good Luck.

I've been going through the same thing. Mine is caused by vitamin indeficiancy (was on the low carb diet and didn't take my vitamins). Do a search and read about Telogen Effluvium. That may be the cause of the hair loss condition some of you may be having. You won't know until you see your doctor. And to tell you the truth, I've been shedding since August 2003. But the shedding is a good thing and you'll find out why once you read about the condition. Good luck all.

I read about that and sounds like that may be my problem. The first time I noticed this problem was during a horrible relationship and this time was the ending of a relationship that I really wanted to keep. It is the stress I guess. Thank you for posting about Telogen Effluvium. It was very informative.

I agree with the other responses -- stress, thyroid problems, and vitamin deficiences (especially biotin, and also zinc, and iron, and if you have too much or too little vitamin A) are common causes of hair loss.
There's also an autoimmune disease called alopecia areata that causes hair to fall out in patches. Then there's the uncurable (?) male/female pattern baldness.
I've been told that it's normal to lose up to 100 strands a day (not just from washing), but that seems like a lot to me since I have thin/fine hair to begin with! I try to avoid rough "scrubbing" and hair brushing. I have a friend who constantly brushes her hair in hard strokes and her hairbrush always ends up with wads of hair... but she doesn't seem to be going bald, though... Lucky!

I looked at the various Nioxin products and noticed that there were several 'types' of their products. I don't think they call any of their products "shampoo" or "conditioner."
What are the names of the products that you buy?

Isn't the 'protecives' formula for chemically treated hair? I think the 'actives' formula is for non-treated hair...does that sound right?
By the way, what does your husband use? I think my situtation might be similar to his.
Also, how much do you pay for your products?

undefinedI just wanted to tell everyone that you should go to a good Dermatologist and let them look at your hair. Get a blood test for thyroid. I did that and my doctor suggested Rogaine for Women. IT WORKED FAST. Within two months I had new hair where I had been thinning. NOW, it is all grown back like normal. THICK! No scalp showing. It is so great. It will cause you to shed the old hair in the beginning, then the new hairs will come in. You have to keep using it daily forever if you want to keep blocking the DHT so that your hair won't fall out again. SMALL price to pay for thick hair. GOOD luck to all!!!!

Which shampoo do you use?

I have had no dandruff or side effects from Rogaine. ALL positive. I am very glad. I was totally shocked that it worked and so fast! I used to have to be careful how I brushed my hair. Had to cover the thin area. It was hard. Really no fun for a woman to have this. I never think about it now. Just brush and go. I did go to my doc. first. :) Good luck.

how long had your hair been "thin" before you started using Rogaine? Do you think your hairloss might have reversed on it's own?
I plan to give my dermatologist another call to see if she has a shampoo that she would recommend to stop the flakes that I got the last time I used Rogaine.
Continued Success!!

[B]I had slowly been losing hair for five years or so. It is SLOW. I used to think I was just kind of imagining the thinning. Last spring, my husband and I had a photo taken of us by my son before we went out to eat for our anniv. When it came back I was sick. I looked awful. THIN on top. NO doubt then, I had to do something. Thing is, the earlier to get help for it, the better and easier and faster. Come to think of it. I have thrown away certain photos of me for over one year now. No more of that. Kind of strange now. I have lost weight and my hair is growing longer-shoulder length. I am really happy.
Yes, call your derm. and ask about shampoos. I would think a nice, gentle shampoo for dandruff would be good. Maybe your hairdresser has an idea also. Are you a woman or a man? How long have you been using Rogaine?

I'm male. I USED Rogaine for about two weeks but HAD to stop because the flakes were almost the size of dimes! I am not kidding. I think it was very offensive to be in public.
I was using the MAX strength formula.

Yes, you can use it on color treated hair. Color treating your hair is a good idea. Your hair will thin again if you stop the Rogaine. The Rogaine stops the chem. DHT I believe and you have to keep using it. Just like brushing teeth, bathing, cleaning your home etc. Just get in the habit. The pay off is worth is. My hair looks like I never had a problem.
I use the Women's formula. 2%. I have no side effects. Go see a dermatologist first. I did.
I color treat my hair. Go to the Rogaine site and you can learn a lot. I sure have. Good luck!!!

Do you feel that the Nioxin for color treated hair takes any of your hair color off or lighten it any at all ??

I do have Thyroid problems and been on the meds 1 1/2 yrs also and i still loose the hair..
Only thing i do notice with Nioxin shampoo it helps make the hair thicker for me but it takes my color off .. Its too costy getting hair colored and something takes it right off ..
Cant win thats for sure ..

Yes, 7 Bugsy is still here !!!!!
My husband uses Nioxin Bionutrient Actives Cleanser ( deep scalp and hair cleanser for non-chemically treated hair ), Nioxin Bionutrient Actives Scalp Therapy (moisturizing & energizing scalp and hair conditioner.......we also cover our bodies with this after every shower ) and Nioxin Bionutrient Protectives Treatment ( scalp treatment for early stages of thin-looking hair).
I use all 3 products but for color treated hair. I always shampoo twice before showering and leave scalp therapy on hair until end of shower. I have never seen any color loss (but I have blonde streaks in light brown hair + a few gray ones thrown in).
We both have been using the Nioxin products for 10+ years (sorry time goes by quickly). My husband is 53 and has never lost any more hair, just a little salt and pepper and I'm 57 and have very thick hair now (NEVER did before)and have had my natural curl return. My hair dresser can't believe how thick and healthy my hair has gotten.
I'm not sure if my natural curl has returned as a result of the Nioxin or 14 surgeries. After every surgery my hair would get darker and after the last 3 my natural curl has returned ( stick straight since age 6 ). This is the same time frame for Nioxin use also.
We find it more economical to buy the cleanser and scalp therapy by the gallon. I have a Manicurist license and buy wholesale ( about $50+ per gallon ) at Beauty Supply. If you have a close relationship with someone licensed you'll save half ( in salon $100 gal ). A gallon lasts about a year. We have 3 women in the family licensed, though none of us work in the profession any longer. It saves us a lot of money on our products.
I know this sounds like a lot of money, but it's wonderful to have a full, thick, healthy head of hair. My husband's young friend has been using Nioxin for about 5 years and thought he could stop........well his hair started falling out, so his vanity won and he got back on Nioxin. Try to see if it's available on the internet...........
The Scalp Therapy completely takes away sunburn pain and you very seldom peel.......it smells great, too.
