Hi sheisherself!
Yes anemia can cause premature greying (my hair was all white by the time I was 30! No hereditary premature greying in my family) and sooooo dry! Are you having treatment? Because all of your other symptoms will improve when your levels go up (although I still have white hair-under all the dye!)
All the best and hope you are felling better soon http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/dance.gif

Greetings Sue ,

I am sooo happy someone replied. Thankyou! I have not been to the doctors yet, because they don't seem to listen to me very well. I wanted to have some ideas when i actually did go. Which I plan to soon. My hair is very dry and frizzy. I am 37 and could cry because i used to have beautiful hair. It is very embarassing. How long have you been treating your anemia? Did you experience hairloss as well as the premature gray? I could fall asleep everyday at work. Does this also impair the immune system? I have been getting alot of viral or upper respiratory infectiions. I am probably deficient in a lot of minerals and vitamins. Anything you can tell me would be very much appreciated. Thankyou and have a good one.

Hi again sheisherself!

I have 'no intrinsic factor' which means I can't absorb vitamin B12 (and causes anemia etc.) but have been anemic FOREVER (well it feels that way!) Please go to the doctor as soon as possible because that way you can start treatment and get well soon!
My hair did fall out and also snapped off at the roots! Also I caught every cough, cold and flu around (yes it does affect your immune system) You get so tired sometimes it's an effort to move (and occasionally pass out when you do move!) You get breathless easily and sometimes depressed. All in all anemia is not a nice place to be.... But it's easily treated. So PLEASE see your doctor as soon as you can AND MAKE your doctor listen!!!!
Let us know how you go.
Best love
Sue

If you don't like Doctors, do what I did. You can order your own blood tests online. Sure, it costs more but you can pay extra for a physician evaluation. They will give you your results (online and mail hard copy) and the reference ranges. That's how I found out I was anemic because I had a hard time getting in to see a Dr. with work. They mail you an order, then you find a facility near you to draw the blood, then wait for the results. Just like a Dr's order only you can choose WHAT you want tested. I went for the FULL test including CBC, Thyroid, liver, etc.. and it was about $100. Well worth it. I got CBC, ferritin and iron levels as well as my thyroid tests. I took these tests to my Dr. when I realized I was anemic. But otherwise, you must go to the Dr who then gives you an order. Then you get the blood drawn and have to go BACK to the Dr. When you work, this could be up to three days lost, in addition to the the treatment involved.

Good luck.

I am now on Chromagen Forte and we think my anemia may be from bad periods.

Anyhoo, my hair did get thin and was falling out and graying. I thought the thinning/hair loss was due to the fact I had it chemically straightened until I started getting weak, dizzy and got Pica (craving for ice and other non food items).

PLEASE resolve this asap. It is important to find the source and treat your anemia (if that's what you have). Keep us posted!

Hello,

I have a doctors appointment tomorrow with a doctor I have never seen before. I was told they will do a whole blood workup. I hope this is true. Will they draw blood if you are on your period? I wasn't suppose to start for another week but I feel like I am going to start anytime now.

Nicolle, did your hair improve with treatment?

Thanks for the reply

Hello Sue and Nicolle,

I went to the doctors today and had some blood drawn for testing. On the sheet it looks like she is doing a complete blood count and a sedimentation rate. what exactly do these show? will ferritin levels show up?

thanks for the reply

In late 2001 I began noticing my hair thinning. I've always had very thick, long hair, but since I was going through a lot of anxiety & depression (including taking many types of antidepressants), I thought that was the cause. Well, it's been over 6 mos. and I've had no antidepressants..though my depression still exists. I've seen 2 dermatologists who told me that b/c I have the sickle cell trait, I'm prob anemic (w/low iron) causing this. I asked if I should tk something to build up my iron, but one Dr. said no b/c I may then have too much iron (?) I'm only 29, and I'm seeing the baldness esp. in the front! I don't know if I should cut my hair short & wear a wig! --Is there something I can do? My gynecolgist did a routine blood test in her lab 2 mos. ago & says things seem fine....Does that mean she checked for me being anemic? Suggestions, comments, help...??
