Hello All--
Went to the dentist today for an annual cleaning and had to have a tooth extracted. Now my surgery is postponed to avoid infection. Ahhh....and to think I was psychologically ready for it. They couldn't wait to extract because they were afraid of infection that could pose a problem during and after the ACDF surgery.
Lexie...I guess you get to fill me in first!
I must admit, strangely enough, that I'm bummed! I just wanted to get this over and done with.

I can only imagine how bummed you are! You were * this close! I guess it is much better to be safe than sorry!!
My hospital release papers suggested antibiotics before any dental treatment ... I was wondering if this was something directed at me, or some other patient. Maybe it *was* directed at me. I'll have to ask!
Good luck! We'll be waiting with you ...

Oh man! I'm so sorry to hear that your surgery was postponed! I just know that feeling you are having of wishing it was over and done with. My surgery is in less than a week and I'm nervous as heck, but really looking forward to it being over with.
Let us know how you are doing, we'll all be watching the boards to see how your surgery went.

I can't believe it!! I'm sorry about being rescheduled. But maybe it is for the best. You just had to make me go first, didn't ya! HAHA...(just a little humour).
Well, I'll let you know how things go. I keep getting more nervous as each day passes. My stomach is so upset now just thinking about it. But I believe we will make it.
Let me know if anything else changes. I'll let you know how my pre-op visit goes.

You know, looking back on my time in hospital 5 weeks ago for FC456 I can actually say I enjoyed it! Its the fear of the unknown. You know the worse part of it was changing the waterproof dressing on my hip. But you girls are used to waxing so can't see that being a problem.
Cheers Hugo

Hi Donna -
It wasn't directed just to you. You now have a "foreign body - prosthetic device"in your body. When you have dental procedures done (even cleanings) most docs req. pre-med. Bacteria released into bloodstreams during procedures cause REAL problems for people with prosthetic devices and heart conditions(ex.murmurs, mitral valve prolapse.)
Do question your Dr. about this, as it should have been explained to you. Also, I would call my DDS and make sure that it is on your health history.
Be safe -

Hello...days later.
Update: I have been in excruciating pain from the "dentist"...apparently they had to cut my jaw bone. The tooth they pulled had hook like roots and had to cut the bone to remove the tooth. This was Thurs...I am still in pain. So, now not only my neck, back, arm and keg, but my stupid mouth too! Well, surgery is on for Monday-hopefully this pain is gone. I was eating mashed potatoes, applesauce, soup...from my tooth, not ACDF.
Anyways...I am so nervous. Still trying to decide on whether or not to use my own bone. It's like a horse a piece for me.
Hope everyone is well.

Hi Irish,
Sorry to hear about your surgery date change. I can understand why they are doing it. My PCP also told me that bacteria can stick to the titanium and cause major infections that would make surgery immediate to remove the hardwear. I also have 2 leaky heart valves and take antiboitics prior to any dental or surgical procedure.
Good luck on the 2nd. It's right around the corner.

I am sorry you have to wait now Irish. I have been thinking about you during my husband's surgery and hospital stay.
He had his last thursday and he is home and doing a little better each day.
At the hospital where we were, the cervical surgery's were up and around in no time and gone home way before the lumbar ones. If I remember correctly, your surgery is cervical.
His surgery was almost canceled twice, but now it's over :)
I will keep sending good vibes your way and I know things will work out well.
