Just found this site and have been reading everything I can about this topic. A few wks ago I was ammitted to the hospital with a very low blood level of a 4.0 I stayed the wk and was able to go home once it reached a 8.8. I have since seen the doctor weekly to monitor my levels which I feel are not doing to good. he put me on vitamins iron folic acid vit c I am also taking 20mg of predisone which I can't wait to finish by the end of the week. All I do is EAT with that medication!
Now my doctor tells me to make a appt. with the surgeon to have my SPLEEN removed! I told him I don't give up my organs that easily so I am going to get a second option. Oh well just thought I would vent alittle. Thanks

I'm surprised your dr. went so quickly to a splendectomy! Is she/he a hemotologist? My daughter had hundreds of tests looking for the reason for red cell destruction. Has your Dr. done much testing? The vitamins, folic acid is right on. Even prednisone. Only massive doses worked for Lynn. There are many many causes for hemolytic anemia and you sure are right to question the splendectomy.
Sincerely,
Mary Ann

thanks I did go to see another hemotologist I at this time okay with him. I like the fact first that he was not in such a big hurry to remove my spleen, even though he has not ruled that out. I also like when I have blood drawn for my blood count (a weekly thing) I know my results in a few seconds where as with the other doctor I had to wait days! He was test the blood for other things trying to find something to pin the anemia on? Well as of Tuesday my count is a 10.7
and if I keep it up he will wean me off Prednisone which I can't wait I am hungry ALL THE TIME and I hope it happens before I eat myself to dead LOL
