I'm a newbie here and I had a question regarding folic acid and Dilantin levels. My new neurologist (I recently moved to a new state) and my old neuro. both recommended that I begin taking folic acid on a regular basis since we are planning on having children in a few years. I have been told and have read numerous articles re. Dilantin having an effect on folic acid i.e. decreasing folic acid absorption. However, has anyone been told or had the experience of their Dilantin levels decreasing due to Folic acid? I had been seizure-free for 8 years. 2 nights ago, I had my third grand-mal seizure. I take 300 mgs/night and my Dilantin level was 10 about a month and a half ago and yesterday, it had dropped to 7. Three weeks ago I began taking 1 mg of folic acid a day which was actually less that my neuro. prescribed. (He prescribed 2 mgs/day) I guess I am frustrated that the new neurologist didn't say anything about the possibility of my Dilantin levels decreasing. Shouldn't he have told me to come back and get my Dilantin levels checked after I began taking the folic acid? Needless to say I have stopped the folic acid. I am just so thankful that I was lying down in bed and I was not driving, etc. when I had my seizure!! Has anyone had a similar experience? Thanks
