Has anyone read about or had experience with using double or triple doses of glucosamine/chondroiten?
A horse Vet friend of mine suggested that since I'd been taking 1500mg's for 2 years with no results, that I should try 3000 mg's for 3 weeks and if I don't see better results, I should quit wasting my money.
He said it really helps most of his horses, but that I shouldn't ask what happens to the horses it doesn't help... Gramps

Hi Gramps,
I'm in agreement with your vet. If you do not notice a significant change after taking the higher dose, I'd quit wasting the money, too. I would, however, give it a good 6 week run, though.
Do you have areas of inflammation? You might consider using anti-inflammatory meds (aspirin, motrin, ibuprofen, NOT tylenol) to augment the glucosamine, if so. Sometimes joint inflammation can block the action of the glucosamine.
I'm not a Dr., though I am licensed to administer meds, and cannot (and wouldn't, anyway) prescribe meds. I would surely speak with your primary care provider before upping your dose and/or adding anti-inflammatories.
Since you mentioned the vet, I have a question. Do you use the same grade (brand and/or quality) glucosamine the vet uses? I know it is available in big tubs at a MUCH lower cost than we humans pay for our little bottles. I've been trying to determine what is different about the quality of it, but so far, no one has been able to say.
Good luck!

You might try EPO next if the mega doses don't show any improvement. Evening Primrose Oil is "natural" and the suggested intake is 1000mg per ailment. It is an anti-inflammatory and can be found in the vitamin section (Walmart has it)
