I'm wondering if anyone does a diet plan where they take one day off a week (a "fat day") to treat themselves and eat whatever they want. I have stuck to my lo-cal diet for 3 weeks now and lost 11 lbs... but today i decided to take a day off and satisfy all the cravings i have been building up... and now i feel incredibly guilty!! i'm quite sure it's impossible to gain back 11 lbs in one day... but i feel as though i've sabotaged all my hard work. Any words of advice / encouragement would be greatly appreciated!!

I have been on the Atkins diet for 3 1/2 months now and lost 47 pounds. For the first month, I did not take a day off. I started taking the day off during the second month, and never go overboard. All I have is my Latte and maybe a scone with my Sunday paper. It has been wonderful. I never gain any weight from it and it satisfies my coffee cravings. I look forward to it all week. It really helps to have my little "reward" on Sundays.

If I were you, I would just have one treat on one day. That way you really won't do any damage to your diet.

Hope this helps...

Good luck to you...

DONT GIVE UP AND DON'T FEEL GUILTY JUST PICK YOURSELF AND TRY AGAIN
WE ALL SLIP UP BUT IT WOULD BE EVEN WORSE IF YOU JUST GAVE UP SO DONT FEEL GUILTY, EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE IT'S GOOD TO TREAT YOURSELF JUST AS LONG AS YOU DON'T GO OFF ON THE DEEP END. BUT LIKE I SAID BEFORE DONT GIVE UP TOMMORROW'S A NEW DAY

I always take a break day, but maybe that's just me. Once a week, I allow myself to indulge (in moderation) in everything/anything that I want, but on the other 6 days, I am vigilant and my daily "cheats" are v. minor (and all w/in my caloric limits).

If you are working out regularly, researchers say it's metabolically-beneficial to take a break day every week. =) Hope that helps!

HI,

I follow the Body-for-Life Program. A key componet of the program is a "free day". The purpose of the free day is to keep you metabolism in check, as well as give you a day to look forward to to enjoy a craving.

When you are dieting you are intaking less calories then your body is burning. When you are working out, the increase in muscle increases your metabolism. However, when you keep having a deficent calorie intake , your body starts to go into a starvation mode and automatically slows down your metabolism. By giveing yourself one day a week to do whatever you want, no exercise, no dieting, you keep your body out of starvation mode. Enjoy the day, over tiem you will start to eat less and less of the bad foods because you feel like crap afterward. You start to realize how much better you feel eating health foods.

You arent killing your diet.

Thanks,

Congratulations on your weight loss. A cheat day is good for the soul.

For some people, refeeds can help break plateaus by giving the metabolism a shot in the arm. They can be good both physically and emotionally. I personally do it every weekend, whether I'm trying to gain weight or lose it.

Worst case scenario is you have to go another three weeks without cheating. No big, just as long as you don't fall off the wagon completely.

I believe a cheat day is good for the mind and the body. Psychologically you get a boost out of eating food you really enjoy, you have something to look forward to during the rest of the week and you don't hate your 'diet' for removing your food pleasures completely. Physically I believe it can help if you have a higher calorie day once a week to keep your metabolism going. One high calorie day a week will not blow the bank.

If you do feel guilty about a cheat day, do some extra cardio the next day rather than reduce the next days calories.

I personally can't indulge unless it's once a month. I had one chocolate chip from the cookie batter my roommate was making and it resulted in eating 7 cookies like it was going out of style. So once a month is my breakdown. I feel so counter productive if I don't stay consistent. It's funny but it's usually my friends that talk me into sharing cheese fries but hand to heaven if anyone steps between me and the fries while I'm eating they may loose a hand. Cause when I do indulge, I mean business! When I do eat something "bad" it's usually when I'm with other people. When I'm alone I really work on making positive choices in my diet. I have really started to think about what I eat and what it would look like on my thighs. So I have my moments but I try not to have a whole day of moments.

I am the same way. If I cheat... I use all my calories for the day to cheat. Otherwise... I will give up and stop if I go over my calories for the day. For example if I know Im going out one night... I will just eat fruit, and then I still have tons of calories left for dinner ect. It works for me. :)
