Ahhhhhhhhhhh
I went into the dentist today, still pain from having the tooth pulled and I have a Dry Socket. He packed it with the nasty tasting stuff and I have to go back on Saturday.
I have a call into the NS to find out what he wants to do, but he's in surgery today.
I am going mad. This is just depleting all the energy I have about the surgery. You know, I get the house ready, all the clothes washed, dinners ready and now this. Not to mention that my husband took family leave and has already changed it once. He may have to do it again. This is crazy! :(

Well, I just got the phone call from the surgeon and it IS postponed. Until when, I don't know. The next open date is March 8th, but they are going to try to get me in sooner. My road dwindles on.......

I am sooo sorry for another delay. All the psyching up only to be deflated!! I can identify with all the houselhold prep too.
There just has to be a silver lining in this cloud! Hang in there! We're all cheering you onward.

Deb--
Thanks for the uplifting words. The whole tooth thing seems so measley compared to my neck but I also don't want to end up with an infection.
How have you been feeling the past couple days?!?

Wife,
I have been thinking the same...there is a reason beyond me as to why this has happened as it has.

hi irish, just a quick note about dry socket, I too had a tooth pulled and that night the pain was so painful i could not stand it.I went to Dr. next day and also had dry socket, he cleaned it out and put antibiotic and pain med. in it, but I think I went like everyday for about 5 days. The pain meds. sont really work, they were like scraping my jaw bone, it was the worse pain ever. I pray they control your pain,as I know it is very painful. You will be in my prayers, and hope all is going well.

Deb,

Lately I have had quite a bit of the burning right in the area where disc is extracted. And the looking down, ha, I wonder if we'll every be able to do that again. This WI weather has been horrendous the past few days, although they said it's suppose to get back up into the 20's. I say that as if that's actually warm. I'm beginning to think that the bitter cold really affects this injury. My symptoms has gotten worse since last week. Although, they are known to go in spurts.
I was in your neck of the woods last weekend--had to go up to work, stopped at the outley (Old Navy) winter sale.
My husband asked yesterday, where are we going for the Superbowl. I laughed....I sitting at home in my recliner, next to the fire.
Hope your days keep you comfortable.
Thinking of you.... ;)

Thanks for the input about Dry Socket. This is my first and best be the last. I went to the dentist today to have the packing changed and he said that it is starting to look better. I thought it was the bone that they had cut causing the pain/pressure, boy was I wrong. It had been 7 days that I had the dry socket before I went back to the dentist. He said I should be in excruciating pain--figured I had a really high pain tolerance. I haven't taken anything for the pain--he prescribed IBU, but it's been tolerable. Might explain how I've lived with this extracted disc/cord compression for the past 6 months. He's hoping by Monday that it will be healing enough itself that he won't have to pack it again. I sure hope not--can't wait to get rid of the bitter taste from the packing.
Have a great weekend! :)

Hey Irish,

Well, It looks like I'm bumped back up to first again. We've got to stop playing this game...somebody has to go first! HA,HA.

I'm sorry for your delay. I hope you are feeling well. It's rough to have teeth problems on top of what you are already going thru. I still haven't heard back from my ortho's office about my new surgery date. I have cleared up that my ortho will take my "new" insurance. I will have to change hospitals. I will let you know the date when I find out. I'm still thinking about you.

Lexie,

I am so happy that things have worked out for you with the insurance. I'm hoping that my surgery date will be sooner than March 8th....I should know by this week.
I'm surviving....as I always have. Continuing PT and Chiro....it helps substancially. PT has been more along the lines of massage therapy, so it continues healthy circulation and deals with all the muscle spasms/kinks.
Please keep me posted on your date. Maybe we'll luck out and go in the same day. What state are you having your surgery?
Thinking of you....

Hey Irish,

I'm in Tennessee. I trust my surgeon a lot. I just hope he is not mad at me for the cancellation because of my insurance.

How is PT going for you ? I did that for a while with heat, ultrasound, and traction (both manually and on machine). I did notice a decrease in the pain that radiates from the shoulder down the arm into the hand. However, I had an increase in numbness in my hand. And then it went into my right foot and hand, my left ear, and my nose....yeah nose; weird huh ? That was in November when I did PT and my Myleogram in December showed the herniation even larger than before and the spinal cord compression had become much more severe. I think it was the traction that made me worse. Oh well...not much I can do now but go back to waiting for my surgery date. I'll let you know something hopefully this week.

I hope you're feeling better!!! :)

Lexie--

I have been so happy with PT. When my injury first occured, I began PT with a different therapist who worked with a completely different approach. It's hard to explain but she pretty much found a pin point area and followed it with her fingers to where that nerve/tendon/muscle ended. It was all very strange, unsoothing, ect. I switched to the PT that my Chiro works with and she is also a massage therapist so the room and her work is very soothing. She does ultrasound, electromagnetic therapy and massage. It has helped tremendously! At the least, it provides much comfort and looses the muscles that tense up. I am really hurting when I don't see her 3x per week. That's why I am surprised when I read here that PT has not helped or has made symptoms worse. Although, it makes sense when I think about the first PT I saw. But if everyone with our injury could find a PT like mine, they would be so thankful. I really think the key is finding a PT that incorporates massage into the treatment. My aunt is a massage therapist focusing on athletes and she said at the very least massage provides circulation, which easily gets cut off from this sort of diagnosis. She also said that Insurance usually always pays for massage therapy in this instance. She said that I should NOT have traction done because that could cause the disc to move more. My PT does manual traction (only for 1-2 minutes) and I think it provides pain relief to me. The traction machine hurt like hell. As soon as I laid my head down, I lifted in right back up again.
I can actually feel when the disc or the gel substances moves, becasue I get the numbness in certain areas (hand, thumb/pointer finger, upper thigh) and shin splints feeling in leg down to toes.
I am anxious to learn when our surgery dates will be. Keep me posted. I will do the same.
Smiles from WI to TN for you...

Hello Cookie and everyone else!
My Dry socket is finally much better and my surgery is tentatively scheduled for March 8th...seems to be the soonest they have available.
Pain has been horrendous the past 3 days...my neck is on fire, pain shooting down my arm into my hand constantly and down my leg that stops at my lower shins.
Thanks to everyone who is always here for me...saying their little prayers. It means a lot.
Hope everyone is doing ok.

I am one of those people that believe things happen for a reason. For a good reason. I hope all turns out well for you.

That was most certainly the case with me! My surgeon fell and fractured his kneecap in late Feb of last year and then fell again and re-injured it. Then these other two surgeons were going to do the case, but theirs was a radically different surgery. The first surgeon was going to do ACDF, the others wanted to do both back and front entry. Meanwhile, my regular health insurance was running out (cobra), so I ended up taking a position to earn health insurance at a local hospital. Finally, when I rescheduled the surgery it turned out the soonest he could get me scheduled was June 30. C-6 was out of place, compressing the spinal cord. My surgeon, the original surgeon, felt he could pop it back into place without entering the back of my neck. Turned out to be correct. So I got a standard ACDF with corpectamy at C-6. So far it's worked out well. Those delays can give you fits, however!

Hello Irish, So glad to hear your dry socket is better, I pray your surgery goes well, I had neck surgery 18 years ago i think c4-c5 and they went thru my neck, they put cadaver bones in and have done fine all these years. I hope you get relieve, nothing like being in pain all the time, very depressing. My prayers are with you, and hope your pain will become a thing of the past.
Hang in there, cookie

Hi, I am new here but I feel your frustration. My surgery was cancelled due to Workers comp not approving it.the Dr feels that it is urgent to do this surgery asap.this would have been my 3 l4-l5 operation.and I can not use my hubbies insurance..so I have to wait until March 8th to get an emergency meeting with a judge, just to get an approval.it is soooo frustrating,I had babysitters set up,meals made and froze so that My hubby won't have soo much to do.That is what makes me really mad.
best wishes.

hi deb,
Sorry to hear of your problem, I too am on w/c, from my surrgery in 2002 I had drop foot, and my ankle gave out dec 2003 and now am going thru recovery of broken ankle, now plates and pins, they just took cast of yesterday, now I have a boot that comes to my knee. God it is so painful when I try to stand, I think it was easier with the cast on, also I have to go to therapy 3 time a week, they have to be kidding, I dont know how I am going to manage this. It will be for my foot, and my shoulder, which I will have surgery in 6mths.on, due to blood clot during foot surgery they have to wait for my arm. At first w/c did nothing, now they came to my dr. visit yesterday and said anything I need, have done. Up to now, I think they were billing my b/c, so what happened I dont know, as long as I get treatment I dont care who pays. It is terrible to be in pain and not being able to get the proper health care, I think we are all numbers and money to them, not people with feelings. I only hope all goes well for you, dont stop fighting, you need care, and they should give it to you. I will keep you in my prayers and hope all goes well for you.
Have a good day cookie

Hi Lexie! Thanks for asking about me. My recovery is still going great! No complaints! I did scrub floors on Sunday and had pain Sunday night, Monday night and Tuesday, but I was okay by Tuesday night. I must have shocked my nerves/muscles by doing all that. lol I feel like you have to start this stuff back up at sometime!

I am having other issues with my leg and hip, I'm following Nero's posts about her upcoming surgery on her back. I haven't had lower back problems prior to this time. My NS said he would order MRI, but I told him I'm not ready to travel down that road just yet. I also keep thinking that maybe I just need to exercise more.

Good luck to YOU!
