Just wanted to get some feedback prior to seeing a nephrologist on Monday regardng our 10 day old son.

Through a difficult pregnancy, he was picked up early as having hydronephrosis of the left kidney which ended up with a bloated kidney which the doctors said would not recover.

fastforward to his being born and the initial ultrasound, there was some confusion as they couldnt find a right kidney at all, while hte left seemed slightly smaller than usual.

We received a mag 3 test (injected dye and measured kidney function) and the outcome was the following. These are my wordings of the results btw.

left hand side:
slightly smaller than normal kidney
enlarged ureter with poor drainage
reflux from bowel

right hand side
no kidney or at least no functioning kidney (no fluid flow to teh area).
reflux into ureter (which is fairly normal in size)

His overall kidney function was apparently the 'low end of normal' which is positive for the moment. His creatinin (sp) levels seem to be 'normal' and sodium and all the ohter tests seem pretty good too.

any input on his situation would be most helpful, I have a fairly good understanding of the scale but not of what can actually be done to correct/monitor the situation.

Thanks :-)

Hello,

My 11 month old son was diagnosed with something very similar to what you describe below. His condition did not show itself until he got a UTI. I know this post is old and Imagine that much has happened since January. My son also had the Meg 3 test just this past thursday and determined that his left kidney does not function. He is having surgery for the Hydronephrosis and blockages in his Ureter on June 1st. The surgery is called Pyleloplasty. From the surgeons point of view it is all very fixable and he will be able to function normally with just the one kindney. Once the blockages and reflux are fixed, the hydronephrosis should clear up. Let me know how your son Hydro. was or will be corrected
