hey everyone,
someone just told me something that really bugged me. I never watch T.v. but a friend of my told me what happened on the recent Average Joe Hawaii - the first man kicked off was because he had a cold sore on his mouth! That made me mad. My friend, who also gets cold sores, told me to check out the Average joe website and sure enough, it says on the webpage "Cold sore Chris" and the producers were making fun of the guy ! I'm so mad.
Society can be so ignorant.

Ignorance is bliss.....which is probablyy why you don't watch T.V. I don't either, because I don't like things that insult my intelligence. One more reason to NOT sit for hours on end and stare at a square glowing box......Hmmmmm, -Orn

I haven't watched this round af Average Joe, but I will admit to being GLUED to the last one. This one didn't interest me much, however upon reading the original post on the thread I did a search to find out some info and before everyone gets too upset about it, I will say that it seemed that the issue was not that he had a coldsore so much as that he went in for a KISS with a sore on his lip. I think that we all would agree that that is inappropriate, as is kissing someone while you have the flu or strep throat or anything else. So, it's just my opinion and I'm not defending anyone here... I wish as much as anyone that the herpes stigma were'nt what it is... but it seems like the issue wasn't just the sore but the fact that he tried to put the moves on her with it.
There may be some fault of the producers, though because I think that they focused a lot on it, making it very evident and glaring. So yes, maybe the producers suck.
Also, while Herpes is Herpes and can be passed to any body part, it seems like the stigma is ten thousand times worse when you've got it below the belt.... like yours truly. I have heard that on the bachelor/bachelorette having herpes automatically makes you inelligable. Anyone know if this is true? Who cares, I think going on one of those shows would be hell on earth anyway!
Oh, and one more thing.... has anyone seen the movie Spinal Tap? There's one part in that movie where two of the band members have giant cold sores and I'm sorry but it is funny as heck. I was watching it with my boyfriend and he said "look babe, it's like you :)" (I dont get coldsores, I have it down below) and then he smiled and kissed me on the forhead and believe it or not it was a funny moment and I think we had sex not long after.
So yes, Herpes sucks and it's a total stigma, but we ourselves have to be OK with it before anyone else will.
Thanks for reading my ramble!

That seems absolutely outrageous, considering that at least 80% of the population has been exposed to the virus. Only a lucky 20% of us get cold sores. Last I heard, HSV1 is not technically a sexually transmitted infections, although it can be spreak that way. I've had them since I was about 8. Probably got it form Aunt Millie or the like kissing me at Christmas. So silly. Very upsetting to hear about that.

Although it sounds bad, you have to look at it from the point of view of the producers and the networks. They have to be so careful to do everything they can to make sure they aren't opening themselves up to a lawsuit. I think checking out any STD, mental history, health etc etc etc is just part of what has to be done to cover their a**. They obviously aren't saying "hey we know you're going to have sex so we better check you for herpes" but the reality is, if someone contracted herpes from someone on the show, you can bet your bottom dollar that they would sue the network, the producers and everyone else they can think of. Would they win? Probably not. But I can guarantee it wouldn't even go to trial because the network would settle out of court just to keep it low key. For example, I'm sure Donald Trump would sue the pants off the network if he ended up hiring an Apprentice who ended up being some con man who has bilked millions of dollars from people. The network has a responsibility to make sure they are being responsible as they possibly can be. Even American Idol let a couple of people go because one was charged with abuse and one has worked for an Adult Website. The network had a responsbility and an image and unfortunately, having someone contract herpes from another contestant would create huge problems. All game shows check out the backgrounds of the people. You may recall the huge scandal that happened from that game show many years ago when they forced a contestant to answer a question wrong because they wanted a more attractive contestant to win. Hey, it's a just business and one of the #1 rules in business is cover your a**. It sucks. But it is reality.
