can anyone help me, I was told by my doctor I had Fibro 2 1/2 years ago. It started after a fall at work which injured my shoulder. After a couple of months i was suffering from acute pain in my neck and shoulder.I have seen my doctor on several occasions and had every type of blood test you can imagine. I have seen two specalists who say they can find nothing wrong. The second specialist and my own doctor have told me "its all in your head."
I take amitriptyline as a muscle relaxant and to help with the depression i get from being in so much pain.I feel i have lost my life. I cannot do the most simple thing without been in agony.I need to regain control of my life and need help. Can anyone give me advice on what to do. I find that heat works well, but I cant spend all day in a hot bath can I.Any advice will be appreciated.

If you have not been to a Dentist you might want to find one that knows how to find and treat bacteria infections in your teeth or gums and get checked to see if you have any.I had FMS for 11 years and it was caused by bacteria in a root canal and under two fillings. The waste these bacteria is posion and that is what caused all my pain.Docters are not trained to take care of teeth so there no help at all.Good luck...........Terry

There is NO evidence that there is ANYTHING that causes FMS in the mouth. Please understand if you are newly diagnosed that there are many out there that may have had a personal experience and felt better that would not be the norm. There are also those out there that would mislead to sell products. I would never state that Terry is lying about her personal experience and is certainly not selling anything. I just do not know of ANY medical professional that would agree with this as even a plausable cause. That being said, Amitryptiline is the off brand of Elavil. Dr's place chronic pain patients on this Tricyclic antidepressant and others in this class not for depression or to relax muscles. The "Tricyclic" anti-depressants serve two functions in chronic pain and FMS. One, they assist in improving sleep patterns by improving seritonin levels in the brain. Secondly, they boost substance P levels in the brain which are the bodies pain pathway. This assists in blocking some of the pain. I have found that these meds alone will not assist most that are in pain in feeling anything close to pain free. There need to be many other therepies included in your treatment. My advice would be to seek out a new Dr that has an understanding of FMS and see if you even have FM.

When i walked into the Dentist office i never expected to get cured of FMS/CFS/IBS but it happend. After the dentist got the bacteria infection cleaned up he told me it would be 60 to 90 days before i got well and he was right. If he had just fixed my teeth and never said anything about what was going on with the bacteria and what it was doing to me i would have still gotton well but i would have not known why. This is all new info to the message boards and people who are sick and cannot find out why.I will not say everyone with FMS has the same thing causeing it that i did.I just know i was cured after getting my teeth fixed........Terry

Hello,
Unfortunatley what you are saying is all to common with those who suffer from myofasical pain syndrome and fibromyalgia. It's an actual statistic that 74% of fibro patients are either not treated or under treated...bad news. Since this disorder was not even taken seriously and made an actual disease until 1991 or 1992 anyways. Most physicians do think that it's "all in our heads", but then again they don't suffer the pain we do, so they are ignorant to it. First off you need to get away from the one that says it's all in your head and do a search for a "good doctor"! What I did was went threw some local doctors and literally called their office and asked if they participate with my insurance, are they taking new patients, and do they or have they ever treated fibro. Once you get yourself a good primary physician you'll be on the right road as he/she will send you off to a good pain management doctor or perhaps a rheumatologist for better understanding and help. Their are tons and tons of doctors out their that are willing to help...you just have to make the effort to find one. I went threw two family doctors, one neurologist, and three pain doctors before I finally found the great one I am currently seeing. I wish you all the luck in the world because no one should have to suffer without medicines, physical therapy, and other things that are available to us.

I rely a lot on heating pad that you put in microwave as it penetrates so much deeper and much more effective than hot bubble bath (which to me is more of a mental therapy). I have also used what I can my "train of pain" whereby I line up bags of frozen vegetables and lay on them for a few minutes and can have a very dramatic effect. I have cold packs also, but vegetable therapy is more effective even though laying on cauliflower can be quite lumpy.

LOL.....terror......go with the frozen peas.....lol. I wanted to caution that my pain Dr has told me that we should NEVER have heat on any one place for longer than 15 mins at a time. It is great and healthy in moderation. He states that if you leave it there too long or have it too hot, we can do nerve damage and actually end up increasing our pain though, for the moment, it feels great. I never knew that and was one that lived on heating pads and hot baths. Please be good to yourself!
