Hello,

I am still a new Diabetic and have just had a multitude of problems. To start with, all in one day I was diagnosed with Diabetes, high Cholesterol, high Blood Preasure and had a heart attach. That was end of October. I am doing well with everything but the Diabetes. I started out at 7.1, started on Glucophage, 500 mg. Had severe problems with my bowels for over 3 weeks, to the point that I was bleeding. Then was switched to 30 mg Actos. Have been on that since end of December. Am still haveing trouble with my bowels, only now it goes from to loose to to firm and still bleed occasionally. I have now, in the last week started retaining water. I watch my diet so close and drink tons of water. I just had new blood test and I am now at 7.5, have gained 26 lbs in the last 2 months. I'm afraid the Dr will want me to start taking some kind of Diaretic, jeez, I already take a handful of pills every morning. Dr is also wanting me to try adding 500 mg of Glucophage to the Actos.
Am looking for some feedback, anybody else have these problems?

I take a diuretic daily as diabetes is hard on your kidneys. I would call the Dr and find out what his thoughts are on the water retention. The diuretic may give you an idea on how much weight you have truly gained with the oral agents. Some people report weight gain when they start diabetic therapy. I have heard this can be due to better control so the metabolism straightens out. High blood sugars can raise your metabolism. Good luck

I was dx w/diabetes 1/92, wasn't quite 40yrs old. I empathize with you. This can be quite overwhelming. I took glucophage 500, 2 pill a day for a yr. It caused me so many problems and weakness, I finally quite taking it. Then I was put on amaryl and avandia. Amaryl was ok, but avandia definitely causes immediate weight gain. Now I just use lantus 50mg at nite and humalog sliding scale. i find that my diet and exercise routine works great at keeping my sugar normal. I use to be 7.5, now I am under 5. Good luck to you and keep trying.
