About 6 months ago i was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, These are the amounts of insulin i was injecting approx:

Breakfast - 8 units Novorapid
lunch - 10 units Novorapid
dinner - 16 units Novorapid
Bed - 20 units Lantus

Just recently i have been getting low blood sugar everytime i eat and has been dropping to 2.4 mmol so now i have altered my insulin intake to:

Breakfast - 0 units novorapid (i am still eating the same and getting 6 on my BM results after eating)
Lunch - dont really eat lunch that often
dinner - 6 to 8 units of novorapid and i eat a BIG dinner and its still below 7
Bed - sometimes 10 units sometimes dont take the lantus and i wake up with a reading of 5 BM

My doctor phoned me up the other day and said my overall control is excellent but she thinks i am cutting it too fine and having too many lows.

Whats happening why am i getting all these low Blood levels all the time yet i'm eating a good breakfast, dinner and a snack here and there.

Is it possible that a type one diabetic could change into a type 2 because i can't handle these lows anymore and the insulin seems too strong for me.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but once we are a certain type, that's it. Welcome to my world :D

What were your insulin units based on? Did they look at your weight and how many calories you consume on a typical day? Static insulin therapy does not work for type 1's because you have a pancreas that it not helping out other than to take up space. The only help you may be getting is the sugar your liver stores and releases throughout the day.

So many things could be going on. How often are you taking your blood sugar? Lantus is an insulin that works over a 24 hour period and has no real peak. This means that you are not stopping any lows by not taking the Lantus. What you could, in fact, be doing is making yourself go high and then crashing back down. You might be staying in a constant state of rebound from high to low.

How did they type you? The only clear test that I have found is a c peptide test to tell what the b cells in your pancreas are doing. I am sorry to have more questions than answers but your diabetic therapy is very inadequate for a type 1.

i think my body is still producing a little insulin...i know this because i had dinner yesterday and didnt take any insulin, i tested it before i ate and it was at 5.6 mmol 1 hour later i tested my blood and it was 10mmol then i tested it an hour later and it was 7.4 mmol then another hour leter it went to 8.2. then i took 4 units of novorapid and it went low.

I check my blood levels before i eat and before i go out in the car for obvious reasons.

may i ask what a c peptide test is??? I've never had one and how would i go about getting one? maybe speak to my diabetic nurse?

They didnt do anything with body weight and calories..i was in an out of hospital within 4 days and all that time was on a drip and lying in bed. i had one interview with a dietician for about 30 minutes and she gave me sheets LOL The NHS is POOOOR

They have said i have got excellent control but they are scared im keeping my blood sugar level too low...i am really thankfull for your help.

Many thanks

C Peptide is a part of insulin. It is a blood test that tells if your pancreas is still producing insulin. I would imagine that you had the test seeing as though you were in the hospital for so long.
I really hate to say this but have you researched the Honeymoon Period? When type 1's are newly diagnosed, their pancreas can, in a sense, kick back in to a certain degree. Their blood sugars are somewhat normal then so injecting insulin at that time would make you go too low. The problem is that the honeymoon does not last. There is no way to tell how long it will be there.
My honeymoon lasted about 6 months but that is just my own experience. Once the honeymoon if over, insulin is the only way to control things. I wish I had better news. You sound like you are doing great on testing. You can do a search on Honeymoon Period for more info. HTH
